Now that it's been out for a while... What are the best things about Reason 7? Did you upgrade? Should I upgrade from 6? I'm on the fence.

Post

Im hoping that the best thing about Reason 7 will be the addition of VSTs in Reason 8. Some may not want that. So be it. It would sure be "the" host to use at that point, even for those who say its not needed... And no, I didn't upgrade this time...

Why is that? Most other hosts which support VST are more "complete" in terms of functionality. IMO VST support would be Reason's death. Of course that is only speculating, but i don't see any reason, why Reason should be superior to the hosts which support VST kind of since day 1.

Note that i don't think Reason will support VST in the foreseeable future. It just doesn't make sense for Propellerhead to support it.

THERE will never be Vst support for Reason! Get over it people lol
:borg:

Indeed. :D Reason is what it is, and that's fine imo.

vst support after rack extensions? forget it!
Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.

I concur, which is to reiterate what so many have stated in the past...that with all of the 3rd party developers creating sounds for Reason and now with the Rack Extensions as well..that should be enough for anyone to be reasonably content with it.

My only complaint,is that Propellerhead has not yet made a sample engine with sufficient scripting to support more authentic sounding programs like orchestral string ensembles.

The way Reason 7 is now,you have plenty of sound options, while also having the stability of a closed system(minus all of the potential bugs of a host that has universal VST support).

I would say that most people who have eclectic styles of music making,do not rely on just one single DAW,to accomplish everything they want to achieve.

This is the very reason why I have Reason 7,Presonus S1 and a copy of Sonar X2 that is on the way.

Reason has it's limitations, but it's still a DAW I cannot live without,Presonus S1 is very easy to use...but does not support video(hence the reason I ordered Sonar X2 Essential)and as I am gradually learning from the Sonar demo,Sonar has some capabilities that I've never seen before.

Since I started out with Reason 4 many years ago,I have sunk about another $600 into it,in an effort to make it my one & only DAW,but then I realized that this was not possible, nor is it the case for any other DAW(for what I do in the studio).

The new EQ display/analyzer (which stays open when you change mixer channels) makes adjustments a lot easier.
I've been having fun with MIDI out, too. Integrated audio file slicing is cool, though I have ReCycle so it's not such a big deal. AudioMatic is actually fun and useful; IMO their comparison to InstaGram filters (which I despise) does it a disservice. Groups/busses are valuable though I haven't really used them yet. The new Pulsar LFO sounds great when used as an oscillator.

No major overhauls to the sequencer, and I'd love to see them include a new instrument (maybe additive, or granular with user sounds) instead of farming them out as Rack Extensions for extra $$. Reason's not all I use but I love it for what it does.

The most important thing for me is that, after all these updates, Reason is still the only DAW I actually have fun in making music.

But apart from that, integrated audio slicing, group channels, parallel channels, and audio analyser tops it off.

I use practically all of the new features on every single project, so yeah, I'd say it's a pretty essential update. Just about everything they added are pretty standard DAW features, but as always, they've implemented them particularly elegantly.

-I thought Audiomatic sounded like a waste of time, but it's become something of a go-to effect. A lot of the presets give you common EQ/compression/distortion effects with a healthy dash of vibe.
Here's me abusing it on practically every track and bus - https://www.dropbox.com/s/8t589vav3jpa2 ... ofthe3.m4a.
-Bussing and parallel channels have been handled really nicely. Hard to imagine living without them.
-Adding pan and volume in the rack radically improves the workflow. Between that and the EQ view, I feel like I do about half of the jumping between views that I did in 6.5.
-I like how the spectrum EQ is a universal view that you can quickly bring up with F2 - no need to insert a plugin to see what's happening in the spectrum.
-It's as stable/uncrashable as ever and possibly even a hair less CPU intensive than 6.5.

I understand everyones reasons and levels of "content", but here is what I dont get.... How is adding this option (and maybe even AU support as well) the death of Reason? In my opinion its another option, and most always more options are a good thing, not bad... And in that support Propellerhead would then have in it more options available to it, than any other host to date... To "corner the market", so to speak. Death? Hardly... Please explain to me specifically just how adding more software options to expand Reason's ability would cause the death of it...?

If they added VST support for Reason 8 as an "option", who here would not add it in ? I mean yea Reason is what it is and people are happy with the current state. How in the world would this add on make Reason "less" fun to use? I love the thing even if I didnt upgrade on the last one, but are you really telling me that if it was an added option on the next version (like the audio recording part was) you would not add or use it?

Really:?: 8)

Some of the things I feel are 7's best qualities are the addition of audio quantize (finally!), the SSL changes that make doing parallel/group channels much, much easier than before, and the Spectral EQ interface for the SSL's EQ. I also use the EMI, but not as much as I thought I would. I still find it a hassle (at least on Windows) to route my VST back into Reason. That said, being able to sequence my Juno 106 and any instruments I have on my iPad into Reason is a welcome addition.

I still use Reaper though. There's just some VST I can't let go.
