HP Ultrabook 4. Keep in mind this is going to be for modest recording purposes, never more than one stereo track at a time, so I do not need a monster. It has a 32GB SSD as wellas a 500GB SATA drive and an i5 processor. I can purchase for $733 USD. I will be running Ableton Live, maybe Reaper, and fairly standard plugins. I do not plan to ever have more than 24 tracks in a mix.

Opinions and options within the same price range would be appreciated. I can spend a bit more.

Those Dell XPS 15 s look nice for a little more cash , also the IBM / Lenovo Ideapad y410p it has a 4th gen i7 cpu for the same price as that HP you'd want to upgrade your HDD to a 7200 or SSD though .

Never buy an HP laptop. It'll all end in tears.

Poorly made, low quality, bad tech support.bbiboy wrote:xybre wrote:Never buy an HP laptop. It'll all end in tears.

p.s AlienWare is better ,right?
Alienware is great for gaming.
I just got an MSI laptop, and most of my previous laptops have been by Asus.

For about $100 more than you are projecting you can get an ASUS i7 processor with 16GB of RAM, a 2TB 7200rpm HDD, a video card with 2GB RAM. If you really want a SSD, then add about $180-220 more and grab a 256GB SSD from OZC or Samsung. Make that your boot drive. Install just your OS and DAW software on it. You should be in good shape for quite awhile. That's what I'm planning on doing at the end of this month. Those specs are for a desktop box though. I would think you could find a comparable laptop for around the same price point or maybe a bit higher.

That's almost exactly a description of my HP laptop. The CD drive is on the fritz- some kind of driver problem. Otherwise good, and it sure has seen heavy, heavy travel and use.thecontrolcentre wrote:My HP laptop is now 7 years old. Its a dual core 1.6 with 2 80gb hdd's running XP. It runs Live 9 suite without any issues. Never had a problem with itxybre wrote:Never buy an HP laptop. It'll all end in tears.
I always keep it jacked up on Lego blocks, by the way, to let it breath. Otherwise it gets very hot and would surely have died long ago.

Yes - and talk to it every morning and every evening - in a nice way. Otherwise - like someone already mentioned - it could end in tears!Aroused by JarJar wrote:...by the way, to let it breath. ...
