Triggering midi from an analog signal, with Detektor or other

Someone mentioned doing this on another forum. Anyone have any experience or suggestions on how to do this? They cited a VST called Detektor, which I downloaded but can't figure out. Anyone familiar with it? To quote from that thread,

I've wondered about what you mention doing with Detektor, triggering midi just from an analog input. I downloaded Detektor, but I can't figure it out. I translated the ReadMe file from German, but it's still a little hard to understand. The VST doesn't seem to have a GUI.... Do you just throw an instrument in after it or what? Any tips would be appreciated!
