How do you organise your classical collection in iTunes?

I've been steadily converting all my CD's to Apple Lossless but for classical CD's I'm hitting iTunes and ID tagging's limitations when it comes to classical. For example I often have several versions of the same piece but recorded by different conductors or musicians/vocalists. e.g. I have 3 different versions of Harawi by Messiaen. If I set artist to one of the musicians or the conductor that makes it hard to find as I tend to remember and organise music by composer but I still need to put the artist/conductor somewhere and if I don't put something different in the artist field iTunes will lump all the versions of Harawi together as one album. Equally the composer field is useless because iTunes insists on lumping composers with songwriters so I have a gazillion names, mostly meaningless to me, in the composer list where I would really just like that to be for actual composers. I tried putting composer names in the artist field but that again ends up making iTunes confused. And then we have pieces where there are several movements for one piece - there is no way to adequately capture that as far as I can see using iTunes or any metatagging system. So how do people manage?

I use [Composer's Surname}: [Album or Collection] in the Album field - this dates back to before when iTunes had group and composer fields that were usable.

If it's ripped from a CD album that has two or more composers on it, I don't bother trying to keep them together through the album title.
