What happend to fan internet sites, all disappeared?

Back in the day there where tons of "unauthorized" band-sites run by fans.

This was a great source of information when wanting to find information about artists, their history, records etc.

But these kind of sites have more or less disappeared, or are not being update anymore.

These days it seems it is only possible to find such information on Facebook, Wikipedia, MySpace or maybe Discogs.

What happened to the DIY attitude in this case?

Because there are more bands, there may be less die-hard fans who run fan-clubs...

And maybe they get less money from the record companies & artists, so it isn't worth any more to run those fan sites...

Because all the record labels cracked down on fan sites for unauthorized reproduction of whatever?

I don't think people got money to run those sites.

It was just fans setting up sites as a hobby, and maybe entering into a web-ring or something like that.

But it seems it was a thing of it's day, like fanzines was in the 70's, kids nowadays only use Facebook it seems.
