English term for microphone setup?

Hi guys,

in german we say "Mikrofonierung" or "Abnahme" to refer to a specific microphone setup used to record some audio. I.e. what microphones or pickups were used, in what arrangement, etc.. What is the english word for this? Also we can say "mikrofonieren" or "abnehmen" as a verb, meaning recording with a specific setup in use. What is the english equivalent?

Recording chain?

That usually refers to the microphone and everything downstream (e.g., preamps, compressors, EQs, etc.)

Or in more modern Cali English: 'Which iPad do I use for that?'

Or in stuffed English studios: Micing the Mick outta it.

Or on homerecording it's: How'd you mic that snail?

Or on KVR (English Channel): What's a mic? Doesn't U-He make a plugin for that?

In summary, we like micing everything while mincing words.

The most commong english equivalent I know is "to mic something", or "micing" (spoken as "mikeeeing"). It's also known as "to pick up a signal", but that's only if you describe what you're doing.


Pickups = Tonabnehmer (Guitar), but we use the anglicism pretty much exclusively over here (Germany) now as well. Same with Fader (Lautstärke-Schieberegler oder Kanalpegel-Schieberegler), Channel Strip (Kanalzug), etc.

'Mic setup' is probably the closest - e.g. "q. what mic setup did you use for that acoustic session?" "a. just an sm57 about six feet back through a DAV1 pre with plenty of gain"

No, microphoning has too many syllables to make an easy rhyme. As in:

Everyone was kung-fu micing
Those engineers were fast as lightening
Tossing Schoeps was a little bit frightening
They fought over the expert microphoning

Sorry, it's a vibe killer. Just mic up and admit it.
