Reject or Embrace Four to the Floor ?

I still use four to the floor,
you know that-
I have 2 synths making sounds that are
prolly terrible, but they allude to some sort of rhythm,
then you get around to adding a kick,
and there u have it boom.
It is tickling something innate.

I'd be a hypocrite to say I hate it and it should go away.
Everything has it's place, but at the same time, there is a time and place for everything, that does not mean every time is a place for every thing.

Point is; I'm getting a little bit sick of it. But...I have used 4-on-the-floor in my tracks....actually, I have used it a lot in my tracks. It wasn't until recently that - I know, seems weird for someone to say - the overwhelming amount of use - and it's not just electronic music.
The thought hit me while I was listening to; first the extremely popular "I Will Wait" by Mumford and Sons, and then right after, "Home" by Phillip Phillips. These more folksie-indie-pop songs utilize the 4 on the floor kick in songs that could have otherwise benefited from a different rhythm.

I know in one of my own songs I had a couple people comment the song fell short because I used 4-to-the-floor instead of a more inspired rhythm.

I wonder if "unify" is the right word for what you're suggesting ?

Both. It depends on the particular piece your working on.

Reject: monotonous, mechanical, stupefying in every sense of the word. At most, throw it in (briefly) for contrast.

Actually this was something I wanted to bring up before, and I guess this is a good post to.

The thing I DON"T like is when songs go into a 4-on-the-floor pattern you get into a "rhythm lock". the four-on-the-floor creates a steady groove and you can easily feel that, when it breaks it creates an awkward feeling because the groove suddenly changed.
Now, obviously, a lot of songs have done Rhythm A goes to rhythm B (4 on the floor) and back to A, it's just when songs do it and strong break, or build between each rhythm helps defeat the rhythm lock.

I can't tell you the number of songs that - it's not horrible, but just leaves a awkward feeling when they just suddenly switch rhythms. The first one that comes to mind is this one:

Switch happens between 1:30 - 1:38

If you do a 4-4 break, point here is just make sure either building out of 4-4 can either build up enough power to break the 4-4 energy, or build down to release the 4-4 energy.

Of course this is all just imo.

for something a bit different, you can always fall back on the 'shuffle'
