This video captures a performance by Slawomir Zubrzycki on the Viola Organista - an instrument originally designed by Leonardo da Vinci 500 years ago.

The keyboard combines elements of the harpsichord, organ and viola da gamba. The performer pumps a pedal that turns a crankshart. When keys are depressed, turning wheels press against strings, creating the sound of a string ensemble.

God, what an amazing instrument! The pressure controls volume, timbre and allows tremolo. He was so far ahead of his time.

Sure. Leonardo was so ahead that a lot (if not almost all) of his inventions have never been realized until today

This instrument could be considered as the first keyboard which include the idea of "combis" as we call it today

The idea of the strings played by spinning wheels (instead of the "pizzicato" technique of the harpsichord or the hammers in the piano) is fantastic. I'm so fascinated by this thing that I'm tempted to built something based on this idea.

But I think that for a DIY project is way easier to use these little motors used for RC cars:

This this was built right here in town. I don't really have any connections to the serious art music world, but maybe somebody I know knows somebody who could talk the maker into letting us record some sapmles. It's a longshot but it might happen.
