When I'm tempted to get new stuff, I often turn to my old issues of Electronic Music, Sound on Sound, etc. I read about music technology in the late 1990s, early 2000s and I'm reminded that people made amazing music without all these state-of-the-art sequencers, plugins, and effects. My setup would have been impossible to imagine in the world of Pentium 333 MHz and 64 MB of RAM. And that wasn't even so long ago...

another trick is to produce like crazy. Then there is no time for thinking about new gear.

Running completely out of any "above cost of living" money is another way. It sucks. Been there. And there again.

For those who CREATE (engaging in actual ART), there no time (or inclination) for GAS.

For those who can't/don't know/don't-want-to-know/know-but-not-enough-to-sustain-creativity - there's GAS.

GAS is the modern ratiocination of drug addiction in the form of audio gear : one can't deal with reality, so one buys drugs (gear) in order to sweeten (pun not intended) the harsh reality : they can't create a song/track (what ?? WE can't make an electronic/rock track ?! but the neighbor's 15yo kid had a HUGE hit... and he's 15, for crying out loud !! so what, WE can't do it ?! answer : nope... sorry).

It is incurable because of two (main) reasons :

It is legal.
It doesn't harm anyone (no, even not your wallet. haven't heard of "GAS Addict").

Women have SAS (shoes acquisition syndrome), and CAS (clothing acquisition syndrome).
We have GAS

I (and, I'm sure, others here of a certain age) find it quite amusing that you refer to the late 90's and early 2000's as your reference point in antiquity.

Go 20 or 30 years further back, and you have professional releases produced on 4 and 8 track analog tape machines.

GAS has always existed, in one form or another. When I was coming of age in the '70's, we didn't call it GAS. We called it "one-more-itis" and it generally consisted of more FX pedals, bigger and better amps, mics, PA's, portable keys (the Farfisa and the Univox were big sellers) and all other manner of what we now quaintly refer to as "hardware."

And, interestingly, the kids with the best rigs almost always had the worst chops.

The more things change...

Amen, brother!

Back when I started playing guitar, I had a cheap Tele copy and a Peavey amp.. jammed out all I could, got my chops down. Recorded to a CASSETTE recorder!

Had a friend in school - his Dad bought him a Les Paul, a Marshall stack, and a reel-to-reel 4-track. He could barely play, but he sure looked cool.

Once I caught GAS, it was all downhill from there..

Closest thing to a cure for GAS:

Group all of your plugins into categories. It will help you eliminate some options that you have too many of in each category. Once you do this, simply do not get another option unless it's better and replaces something you already have... e.g:

Instruments:

Synths:

Subtractive > Option 1, Option 2, ect
Advanced > Option 1, Option 2, ect

Samplers:

Drums > Option 1, Option 2, ect
Melodic > Option 1, Option 2, ect

Effects:

Reverb > Option 1, Option 2, ect
Delay > Option 1, Option 2, ect
Compression > Option 1, Option 2, ect

Its got just enough of everything to make me that 'i dont really need that new xxx as ive already got yyyy'

temporary cure for GAS for me: I just have to look into some lib/synth and discover that I haven't even heard all the presets yet
