Hi - I'm looking for a simple set up for live performance using a midi controller keyboard, laptop and VSTi. Nothing too complicated (I think?!), I'd like to be able to split the keyboard to strings / piano but would only be changing sounds between songs initially. I've found some instruments to use but I'm struggling a bit with a host. So far I've tried chainer (sounds are ok but I'm getting a bit of a lag) and a Kontact player demo (struggling with the sounds).
Got to be freeware or possibly a demo and nothing too complicated to learn - I have a gig in 2 weeks time and need to spend time practicing not learning a software package!
I've had a search of the forums etc but feel i'm going round in circles a bit!
Thanks

If you want to split your keyboard, try Cantabile Solo 30 day demo. If you're going to use 32bit vsti's, get the 32bit version. Asio4all will help reduce latency. A search in the Instrument forum will help you find free pianos and strings.
Good Luck and have fun.

There's also a free version, Cantabile Lite.
CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin, Moved to Reason and Rack Extensions exclusively (from Reaper and VSTs) several years ago.

I did this for one rehearsal to run VB3 and Mr. Ray's (it was a blues/rock gig). Bass player showed up at the next rehearsal with a Nord Electro 2. I used the Nord for the gig!thecontrolcentre wrote:You could try VST host / SAVI host ... both are free.

Tbh, i can't at all recommend the latest version, v1.54. It's full of bugs, using the pitch wheel gives audio stuttering, same with the mod wheel, app crashes with certain VSTi's, and sometimes i get a "Failed memory allocation" error or something when i close it. V1.53 was much more stable and bug free though. Not sure what the dev changed, but it broke a lot of things it seems.thecontrolcentre wrote:You could try VST host

PedalBoard2 http://www.niallmoody.com/apps/pedalboard2
plus
the Piz MIDI plugin collection (pack) for splitting/redirecting specific notes (thinking multiple instances of the Force to Range plugin may be the way you want to go) to different instruments. http://www.thepiz.org/pizmidi/?p=pizmidi
All free options, but you can donate if you want.
I'd at least give this combo a whirl, see if it works for you; I've used it in fashions similar to what you've described you want to do; works for me.
