How to go about recording an impulse response?

This is something that has interested me recently. I think I have access to resourses needed and have a few locations in mind but don't really know how to go about it. From what I've heard, you record a pistol blank shot or a balloon popping in the location selected. Any help appreciated! Thanks.

For more accurate results it is common to use a sine-sweep across the audible frequency range.

Balloon burst/clapping quick burst sounds are ideal, you'll find if you try anything else it gets all metallic.

For the ones I use I just sampled an FM synth, quick hard metallic whack synth.
