Performing live with iPad

I’m a longtime Mainstage user, but I want to switch to an iPad based keyboard rig. Most of the iOS music apps and articles I’ve read tend to focus on recording, sequencing and/or connecting external gear.

I’m only concerned with using an 88 key controller connected to iPad via the CCKit as my live rig; no sequencing, no drum machines, no recording. Mostly piano, wurly, organ, mellotron and some synth pads and various split/layer combinations of those.

So I need an iOS app that can act as a performance based “front end” (like Mainstage does for Logic and third party plug-ins) on the iPad. An app that, once set up with whatever splits and layers of various iOS instruments are needed for a particular song, stays in the foreground and can be used as a midi/audio mixer and route various controllers from the keyboard.

I've glanced at MidiBridge, iMidi Patchbay and Jack, but can't find much info on using those for live performing.

Thanks for any info!

There is no app that can change patches in another app unless it supports program changes via midi.

What apps are you looking at for playing live?

Maybe Sampletank for iOS can be setup to play splits and change multi programs quickly.
My advice would be though keep it simple and use only one app on one device at a time.

Since I'm only using one keyboard, I need to have splits and layers for various instruments simultaneously. Mainstage is fantastic for this, but I was hoping from some kind of iOS solution. I was thinking of having Galileo, iGrand, Animoog and some kind of Mellotron app open at the same time and be able to fade levels of each in/out as needed. Maybe iOS isn't quite there yet?

Sample tank can indeed accept program changes from your connected hardware (even when running in "background mode". Although I daresay all apps that have a bank of sounds will respond the same way.

Responds to normal CC0/CC32 Patch change data...it has 128 user sound slots that you can assign patches to and then select them remotely sending the above-mentioned data.

For example using an app called Unrealbook, you can embed the midi data in the chart (sheet music) which then sends it when the chart is loaded. It also contains a tool called "Transmogrify" which allows you to place "buttons" anywhere on the chart page for sending data at any time during a song...for example to change data mid tune...

No need to sell me on unRealBook...I've been using it since the iPad 1. Love that app! It's mostly for my piano-heavy gigs, though. The "keyboard" gigs are generally with music that I already know.

I think the underlying answer is that there really isn't an elegant solution to my "iOS app that's like Mainstage" query. At least not yet.

Fair enough :) ...so you know all about the Transmog buttons, and the MIDI settings page from the settings menu? Where you can set up strings of MIDI data, even Sysex?

Doesn't have to be a "music" chart...can simply be a blank chart with say 10 or 20 transmog buttons, each set to do a different MIDI task when pressed - for eg fro my Yamaha MOXF I use it to change modes, or load songs or change MASTERS, change Performances - whatever and you can even select what channel you want it to go out on..

But if you know about it already, then you obviously have tried all this stuff ;)

I have heard of plenty of folks who swear by UB, but never had a CLUE about these functions as all they used it for was charts...then hook up the new iRig BlueBoard (if you don't know it it is a bluetooth 4 switch foot controller) that Aron has now set up to work with UB and it opens up a whole range of other options.
