Hi guys,

I'm studying music theory behind writing chords and melody's for a while now, and writing it is going better and better.

When I listen to songs like Showtek 'We Like To Party' I notice that they use a different melody (chord progression?) in the break then they do in the drop.

Can someone explain what te relation to these two melody's is? And how that can explained music theory wise (scale?).

Thanks!

They will generally use the same scale, but not the same chord progression. A lot of time the drop will have a more interesting and complex rhythm but fewer different pitches (possibly a lot of repetition of the same note), and the break will have a less complex rhythm but more note values. The chord progression in the drop might be implied, with the chords never fully spelled out, and it tends to stay on the tonic chord longer - maybe three measures of (implied) tonic and one measure of something else, for example. I haven't properly analyzed a lot of progressive house tracks, but that's the general impression I get.

They dont use any chord progression in their drops. They only use the same scale. But to make the transition from build up to drop producers usually put a filter or/ and loop a section of the drop melody and increase the volume as the build up approaches the drop.
Basically you can use any creative way to introduce the drop (use different filters, loop a section, use rhythmic snare or percussion or any riser effect with the same rhythm as the drop melody)
And then...BOOOOOM

Hope it helps!

Cheers!
