I'm looking for a free converter for PC (Win 7). I have a little Philips player that includes a converter but it fails to convert files properly sometimes.

I found a few potential ones after doing a search but they look like dirty installs. You know the type that mess up your browser etc.

So, can anyone recommend a trusted application? A trusted download location would be most welcome too. :)

I use Aiseesoft Total Media Converter for this task. I got it free via Giveawayoftheday.com a few years ago... I don't know if it's worth the $32 (with discount) but it does its job great (even if the German translation is horrible).

But I'm sure there must be other free converters, too.

I've found another converter which supports most audio AND video formats, and it's free:

XMedia Recode

I tried it and it converted mp4 to wmv without any problems.

It's from a German programmer, so you can expect some quality.

EDIT: I got automatically the German translation (which is great, anyway, as I'm German). If you want to have it with English translations, you can change the language in "Optionen" -> "Einstellungen" -> "Sprache".

I use Format Factory for all my video conversions. It even supports basic editing. Freeware.

Super is what I have been using lately. Just forewarning you, the installer package includes a lot of bloatware, so when you install it make sure you do the "custom installation" to make sure you don't install that crap.
Of course, if you have found better options from the above posters, then that's fine too. Just wanted to drop my 2 cents.

I don't trust that "Super" converter anymore. Experienced twice that the PC began acting very suspiciously after some time.
I heard great things about the AVC Converter, haven't needed any for a while:

huh? really?
I rarely use converters, but I hadn't really noticed anything suspicious since I installed it. But I always run the custom installation and uncheck everything except the main program.
I thought super was nice because it has a lot of different options for conversion. I did recently convert a file from M4a to .ogg. None of the WAV codecs worked when I converted from M4a, but I could get it to convert to .ogg just fine.

I've heard of AVC too. I had no idea there were so many formats. :-o
