My beef – well, not so much a beef as a concern – is the regular rehashing of the notion that vinyl is making some sort of comeback. Because it’s not. Yes you can walk into HMV and buy a deluxe 180g reissue of Siamese Dream, but it’s not as if vinyl went anywhere… nor will it ever lose favour.

Worthwhile reading for anyone into vinyl. I love vinyl but like the writer of this article I think it's more of a second hand phenomena than anything else.

maybe the guy or girl who wrote the article should try actual record shops rather than hmv which these days is an entertainment store.

I heard that Shellac is planning a comeback. Reportedly, Neil Young is planning a reissue of his 1991 Live recording "Weld" on 29 Shellac discs (Special Edition "Arc/Weld" including an extra 9 discs). Limited edition, only 99999 sets available.

Shortly after that, iZotope will release a plugin that will emulate the sound of different 10" and 12" Shellac discs for only $299, leading to hysteric flame wars in audio forums worldwide about whether it sounds like the real thing. The whole debate will finally cool off when a shellac emulation is introduced as a standard module in SynthEdit in 2017 (32bit only).

Right after I put all my vinyl on disc.....
I might as well just wait until the Google Brain drive comes out, then I can just upload it into my head...

I have a friend who used to have a distribution company and he said that record stores are starving. There's a small increase in sales for vinyl, but it's mostly in the second hand market and it's always the same stuff that sells: Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, etc. If you own a store, you don't make much money with brand new LP, but you can make a small living in the second hand market (from what I've been told).

Reality check: vinyl is not back.
