Thanks, I didn't know about that one. I'm finishing up a female death metal growl library (not my voice) with a few hundred samples, want to see what competition I have.

good tip Aloysius.Let's expand the discuussion beyond guitar
beyond guitar bass and drums.Omnisphere and zebra Are great addition to the virtual metal band.
Synthmaster and it's expansion packs are excellent prog metal tool Probably my next purchase.
the vb3 is a rocking organ!
Back to guitar, bass, and drums. I'm Demoing positive grid and revalver 4 amp sims with vmetal shreddage 2 with clasic expansion pack.
the new ample sound basses are very realistic and sound great.

Death metal girl vocal samples are done!

Assembling lyrics takes some time, but it works pretty well once you get the hang of how to time the consonants and how much to overlap vowels. Here's a short demo also using MT Power Drumkit 2, and Plogue Sforzando with the Emilyguitar and Growlybass libraries, plus, uh, some amp sims I don't remember right now. First is a recording of her growling a complete phrase, then the same thing assembled from phoneme samples.

I admire a good keyboard shredder as much as any musician who actually commits themselves to playing as opposed to programming or sampling tracks.
That being said being a guitarist first and foremost I see several unique characteristics that are absent in plugins or simply not possible.
Pick Direction
The plugins I've heard all sound like downstrokes. There is no up/down or up/down/up or down/up/down control that is instantly accessible.
Pick Articulation
The picks location relative to the bridge and up to the neck has a direct impact on the character of the tone. The angle of the pick as it attacks the strings (flat side, leading edge, trailing edge) also correlates to the character of the string attack and brilliance.
Artificial Harmonics. with a shift of the wrist the character and pitch can vary widely as well as the delicate balance of muted either left or right hand with unmuted notes all while playing.
On a guitar set to standard tuning there are 5 middle C's for guitar. first fret B string, 5th fret G string, 10th fret D string, 15th fret A string, 18th fret low e string. Each of these same "middle C for Guitar notes occupies the same note in the harmonic range however due to string tension and gauge sound different. Whats more when someone plays unison (same note on different strings) they ring out differently and louder then playing one note harder by itself.
I could go on for pages and pages about the characteristics of playing a real vs virtual guitar regardless of plug in brand names which don't jive.
Roger Linn put this rather succinctly in an article for Wired
And while I have great faith in the linnstrument( I want one bad) it still pails for recreating the full depth and breath of technique offered by playing an actual electric guitar.

Roger Linn put this rather succinctly in an article for Wired
http://www.wired.com/2015/03/linnstrument/For proof of the MIDI’s woeful sonic performance, look no further than the demise of the musical solo. Resuming his lecture, Linn presents a persuasive theory. “Is there any famous virtuoso player of electronic instruments you can name? The closest thing we have are EDM DJs, who don’t actually play any notes. The concept of an instrumental solo has virtually disappeared from today’s electronically generated pop music. I’d argue this is due to the lack of any compelling instrumental performances.
And while I have great faith in the linnstrument( I want one bad) it still pails for recreating the full depth and breath of technique offered by playing an actual electric guitar.

It really depends on the sound library.tapper mike wrote:...I see several unique characteristics that are absent in plugins or simply not possible.

...
Elecri6ity; info from the MANUAL :
The following performance variations have been sampled.. are editable, can be assigned.. and automated:
-guitar pickup
-guitar tone
-guitar volume
-strum time
-strum direction
-pick direction
-pick position
-etc...
That's just from the main performance page, alone. Almost every performance parameter, on any page.. can be assigned and automated.
Harmonics are available through key switches.
Now.. what you get in these vst/sample packages, and what may actually ever be used, is another story. What you're probably not hearing, in most examples you may happen upon.. are all of these things being utilized.. or many of them being used in an incorrect manner.
Most folks, like me.. who use guitar VST's, have never picked up an actual guitar in their lives. So, the things you are familiar with doing as a guitar player, with these tools.. will never occur to someone who is not.
I personally listen to a lot of guitar oriented music.. and tend to have a pretty good ear for picking out the things that can help a virtual guitar patch deliver a more realistic result. But, that's just me..
Every artist is going to have a different musical approach, level of skill.. and experience. So, the results are going to vary greatly between each individual.
Here's one off my last album, that covers most of the articulations you say you tend to hear missing from a lot of virtual guitar music (pick variations, harmonics.. etc..):

All of my music is made with the Shreddage X/Shreddage II libraries. I play all of my stuff using controllers. I still have a ways to go when it comes to my rhythm guitar ideas.
That said, I've always wanted to learn the electric guitar and plan to start sometime later this year. I have recently been forging my way into the hardware market, a few weeks ago buying a MXR M80 to use with the bass libraries that I have. Next step is a Darkglass B7K. I LOVE the sounds I've heard with that.

Also, here's a new heavy guitar sample library I found: https://versusaudio.com/?product=vs_heavy_7z
The samples on the site don't sound that great, mainly because of the guitar tone. I'd love to try it and see what I can do but the Kontakt script is written mostly using Kanji. To me, Sheddage II is the most realistic sounding guitar for Kontakt.

For my stuff, I used a combination of Shreddage 2X, Prominy's V-Metal and Electri6ity. It all turned out fairly well, I think.

Rick, How is the second CD coming? How is acoustics?
Tony, This is some of the best virtual guitar playing I've ever heard!
What amp sim are you using? I've followed you on the UAD forum for years
Your posts are very informative. Are you still using UAD plugins? They have got
some great guitar oriented plugins,The brainworks and softube amp sims,MXR flanger,
the plate 140, fatso, etc... My Uad-1 plugins are collecting dust on the old machine.
Had lots of plugins. Hope I can recover the auth file, the power supply is down on that machine.
I really screwed up by missing that trade in.
