I already asked NI support but they're taking forever to respond.

So i have Kontakt 3 and am considering an update to 5. however, i don't have K3 with me. It's sitting in a box at the other end of the country.
Is the registration information i have on my NI account enough to get the K5 upgrade working? I strongly assume it is, but have to make sure.

On a side note, anyone got a clue if K6 is around the corner? I'd hate to buy the update and see it released a month later.

I think your original K3 serial will be enough to upgrade with as the K5 upgrade comes with a completely new set of installation disks. Which, by the way, if you are in the states, I would be able to cut you a great great deal on. As I have an extra copy of the update that I'm not using.

Yep, it is. They go by registered serials; if you've installed and activated K3 at some time, you're good.
