EMS Synthi A-vs what are you supposed to do with it?

Hi,

I downloaded the EMS Synthi A-vs (demo) VST, of course there is the annoying white noise every 10 secs, but nothing can be recorded on a midi track with it, only leads or bass patches can be recorded. The sound effects don't register in the midi track window? After testing this VST.

So my question is, if you cannot record fx sounds in the midi track window, as it does not contain midi note data, what exactly is the purpose of this VST.

All my other VST plug-ins record just fine, except this when i want to capture fx sounds, nothing shows up.

I am using Samplitude as my DAW and VST host.

Tried Cynthia and some others, sfx won't be recorded, but any with lead or bass sounds will be recorded in midi.

I must be something wrong here :?

The the EMS Synthi A-vs plugin has been around for about a decade (the .dll is dated 2004), and Ive never heard of anyone buying it at that price (particularly since it was made in SynthEdit which commands lower pries than native software), let alone using it.

However if you read the manual, it clearly tells you how to get MIDI to control the pitch of patches. Page 6.

A real Synthi is a somewhat erratic beastie, though, and people didnt generally use them for bass or key sounds; sound effects was their forte, and people played the knobs etc, not a keyboard.

Don't know. Wouldn't touch it at that price.

I used the Cynthia one - apologizes if this sounds obvious but alot of the patches are basically the vst as a noise generator - the hardware (and software emulations) will make sound effects without any sort of trigger (unless you program it that way) so no note on or off data in a DAW is needed.

So you may find patches where it will start up as soon as you load it - some may only start when the DAW is clocking (ie playing or recording).

Sometimes it takes a while to figure this thing out - it helps to look at the user manual for the hardware - you can google that.

There are a number of free ones I think that are worth a go. If you have Reaktor then there is one called SIAC and there was one called something like Xlis or something. I did use the Cynthia one - that was a pay one but I see it is now free.

Cynthia was always free, I believe; its the XILS one that's commercial.

edit : ah, you got that. neffermind.

Okay, there are some settings it tells you to play the A-vs from a keyboard, now it works, you can trigger the sounds from there via midi.

However there are still problems, even with Cynthia and the EFM Synthia2 (have tried these 2 vst's) as well the A-vs plugin, any changes in the sound you make by tweaking the knobs on screen are not present when recording in a midi track, Even on playback after recording, no sound is output!! All my audio/midi settings are correct.

I wouldn't pay £50 euro for an out of date VST either. Perhaps someone will come along and make a better one lol.

Moving knobs in any VST plugin doesnt normally get recorded as MIDI. Parameter changes are normally available as automation data.

XILS, as has been mentioned before. The LE version is 30EUR.

There's already one and its called the Xils 3. Moreover, Xils 3 comes with an emulation of the EMS 256 sequenceur, has aliasingfree oscillators, 0df analog filters, more possibilities like 3 switchable trapezoidal/adsr envelopes, audiorate LFO with osc, you can assign Midi ccs to knobs etc, and .....

It will receive a BIG and MAJOR update very soon :)

Note ; The Xils 3 LE version is very affordable, serial protected, and still a full modular synth.

Memory is an uncertain friend. You are right - I probably used Cynthia - the one I was thinking of was called Synthia - it was from EFM and is now free

The Xils one is great.

There's a cut-down version of the Xils 3 (LE version - look in "Appetisers" at the bottom of their products page). No dongle required for this version, and though I'm sure it serves as a nice appetiser for the complete thing it is a full synth in its own right.

Not *quite* captured the sound of the original, but better than any other software emu I've come across (although I've had fun with some of those too in the past). Someone once gave one to my dad to fix (he was an electrical engineer and mended tv's and vhs recorders and such - this was beyond him as it was never fixed) and then never picked it up. It was the VCS 3, I think. Oscs were all over the place and the reverb was broken (yeah built-in spring reverb in the unit!). I think it ended up in a skip during a clearout. Would be cool to have come across that one in the loft now that I'd appreciate its knackered sound.

ok the thread is moving very quickly - Synthia is very old and was very cheap even when it was pay for so it maybe it isn't as well spec'd as you might hope.

I gave up with EMS vsts. (I'm on the list for a hardware one)
