Hello, I am wondering whether a 7"" vinyl single from the United Kingdom will work with US equipment. I can't seem to find the US version of a record, but perhaps it doesn't matter.

:hihi:

A single "yes" or "no" would suffice. My understanding is that the center hole on the record has a different size in each region, so I'm not sure whether that would prevent me from playing it.

Post

Sorry ... I thought you were joking. Of course it will work.

Post

Thank you, I just wanted to check. I assumed that it would work.

Ah... player standards back in the day were better than media player standards today.

DVD Region codes or Blu-Ray area codes anyone?

Region codes make little sense to me.

You can buy spindle adapters for those records with the larger holes. In fact a lot of singles sold in UK in the '70s came with them fitted.

Post

Do you need such an adapter?

Post

no.
No matter where the records were pressed, there are only 2 sizes. The big hole and the little hole.
Most turntables come with an adapter to make the big hole into a small hole.

Post

My mistake, I was thinking you wanted to use record with a juke-box fitting on a standard record deck/turntable. As far as I know, turntables should use 7.26mm spindles in both the US and UK.

The truth is that I'm trying to find a turntable so that I can play a couple of old records that I have. My budget isn't large, but I'd like something that doesn't damage the vinyl (due to a cheap plastic needle or weight) and something that also has built-in speakers and/or pre-amp that allows for headphones.

yup, juke box versus turntable holes. as seismic mentioned the adapters can be purchased, usually for about 50p from record retailers or as acid mitch states turntables often come with one.

rpm and such are universal around the world so you should have no issues playing the record in question :)
