I know I am late to the party on this, but I only recently purchased a computer that has the horsepower to run this synth. It is not the most powerful in the world - a 27" quad core 3.2 GHz i5 iMac, but it does a pretty good job.
In any case, I downloaded the demo, and was immediately THRILLED to see that a whole bunch of the Diva presets were created by Howard Scarr. I have a Virus TI, and many of my favorite Virus presets were created by Howard. He creates very musical, usable sounds, IMHO.
I CANNOT WAIT to get down to composing and recording music with this synth. It sounds utterly fantastic - more organic and 'analog' than any other software instrument I have ever played. And Diva produces polysynth sounds that are more gorgeous, and can't even be touched by instruments like the Prophet 08.
Yes, it is rough on the CPU. While my iMac can easily handle any sound I've found so far, with full polyphony, it will be necessary to freeze most or all Diva tracks before moving on. But it's really no different than working with hardware analog synths, that aren't multi-timbral.
Anyone else making great music with Diva?

I'm afraid to demo it, because I'll probably want it. I might soon block u-he from my browser to stop the gawking.

Don't forget about the multicore button. It dramatically reduces the CPU usage but is off by default.

Depends on the DAW. In Reaper it actually INCREASES the CPU usage. I guess it's clashing with Reaper's anticipative processing.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote:Don't forget about the multicore button. It dramatically reduces the CPU usage but is off by default.

Of course. I use most of the time the Jupiter 8/6 part of Diva for pads and stuff. Sometimes I prefer it over my Virus.
Yes, Howard made also some presets for Access which are IMO often more "oldschool" and sometimes also more usable. Together with Rob Papen some of the top preset designers.

Not on my system it doesn't - eg my patch "Death by beauty" which is a real cpu guzzler is unplayable live in Reaper with 12 voices set to divine but when I switch on multicore it plays smoothly with less cpu (although Reaper's cpu meter is a bit weird, when I click multicore the total cpu usage does appear to go up but the track cpu usage goes down! However going by the sound I am getting far more voices in Reaper using multicore)EvilDragon wrote:Depends on the DAW. In Reaper it actually INCREASES the CPU usage. i think if you have a daw which handle multicore you have to turn it off inside the plugin or vice versa. can't imagine how it could work when you turn on multicore support inside both. didn't they interferer each other?
Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.

The entire factory soundset for Zebra2 is done by Howard. He's also done a large portion of the ACE factory sounds too. Be careful demoing those synths with your wallet in reach...mwalthius wrote:THRILLED to see that a whole bunch of the Diva presets were created by Howard Scarr. Hmm, let me test that...aMUSEd wrote:Not on my system it doesn't - eg my patch "Death by beauty" which is a real cpu guzzler is unplayable live in Reaper with 12 voices set to divine but when I switch on multicore it plays smoothly with less cpu (although Reaper's cpu meter is a bit weird, when I click multicore the total cpu usage does appear to go up but the track cpu usage goes down! My Ableton Live 9 is set to multicore
Diva is always set to multicore without it I get crackle in the audio.

Diva is still the queen of all synths to me, even after all this time and all these new and exciting synths that have come out. I'm amazed how much complexity it can accommodate, despite at first seeming to focus on delivering basic sounds with exceptional quality. You can go waaay beyond basic, to the point that you can even do weird chiptune tricks which are impossible on most synths. (Mostly thanks to the modulation transformers)

Diva is my go-to synth. It's pretty rare that I have to turn to my other synths (Lush-101, Alchemy, Synth Squad, and Monark).

Thanks for this tip. It definitely lowers the CPU usage meter inside Digital Performer.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote:Don't forget about the multicore button. It dramatically reduces the CPU usage but is off by default.
