and it makes bank. What percentage of revenue is fair to get with that video?

i think the easy answer to this is whatever the agreed upon percentage is.

1. if you dont have a previous agreement...well youre kind of sol. if this was a concern you should have discussed it prior to doing the work. you can still ask for something, but you arent owed anything. if the people you worked with are cool, then lucky you...see #2

2. if youre asking about what is fair to ask for before you do the work, well thats dependent on a lot of variables. ask for what you want (keep it reasonable). it will either be accepted or rejected, if its rejected they will probably give a counter offer.

I'm no attorney, but it seems to me that one major consideration is how much the music contributed to the video going viral. Does it stand up to the but-for test?

If there is no prior agreement, then whoever posted the vid wasn't authorized to use the OP's music. So, in that situation, the OP wouldn't necessarily be SOL. He would just have to prove that he owns the copyright, and the burden would then be on the person who released the vid to prove that he/she had permission to use it.

i meant prior agreement on money. i was working under the assumption that the work done was done specifically for the video where the videos creator had permission to use it. seeing as how nothing was mentioned about it being an unauthorized use of the material.

youre right though...but then it would be an entirely different situation.
