I've been asked to produce a jingle for a local radio station, advice?

I've been asked to produce a jingle for a local radio station, anyone around here do that kind of thing?

Just looking for some ideas or guidance.

They not only want me to do the jingle but also a few short little bits to go in between the songs.

I'll work it out regardless, but I just thought maybe there's a chance someone here does that kind of thing on a regular basis.

Ask them for references, as clear and concise as possible. Specific music tracks or radio jingles are better than key words and descriptions. Find radio stations with a similar profile in other countries and listen to how they use jingles and ear candy.

Sound on sound has an entertaining and possibly useful series of articles called Notes From The Deadline. It's about producing music for TV, but some ideas may be relevant for you.

I just talked to him again just now, it was good, we seem to be on the same page genre-wise, they play a lot of ambient 80's stuff, so I said:
"I'll avoid doing what they would do on a top 40 station, I'll probably do something along the lines of Drive by The Cars"
he said:
"Yes, that would be perfect, something that would fit seamlessly between two songs"
So we're heading in the right direction as far as the sound of the instruments goes, it's more the 'structure of a jingle' that I'm new to, I'll need to do some Google'ing I think!

When they play Ambient stuff, maybe it would be better to use a jingle that wakes listeners up from time to time, like a round of gunfire, the name of the station/program, and a second round of gunfire

Perfect, better yet: Gunshot, Station name, Skrillex wobble sounds, the end.

Number 1 make it cheesy..... Number 2 it's got to be sooo last year. Like TV commercials that think they have tapped the pulse of the cutting edge. By the time it's on TV or the radio it's already over, it's been over run.
