I believe that the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth can be made to use a different, better sounding DLS file.

There is a setting in the Windows registry for specifying the DLS file to be used by the synth. The default setting is as follows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectMusic\GMFilePath="%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\GM.DLS"
You can download other DLS files such as the 25MB Fury DLS bank, or you can convert a SF2 to DLS with the proper utility.
