This is an annoying new trend it seems - Voxengo's site is a good (bad) example - no prices upfront - just went there now and there is still something in the cart from last week when I needed to check a price - this an instant off-putter to me - web-shops should be open and transparent about their prices.

In our case, most of our vendors don't allow us to advertised the discount prices upfront. That's why we created our login site, that way you can just log in and then you'll see your prices right at the front:

That's not so bad - I do understand that - I wasn't really thinking of your site, you can still see the prices by the item there after logging in, it's not the same as having to put them in the cart just to see how much they cost.

it is annoying, but they do it for a reason.

if its displayed right there on the site, then it can be used as an "advertised price" for places that do price matching, which could (and most likely would) result in lost sales.

also as was mentioned...some vendors dont allow for some prices to be displayed like that, for much the same kind of reason.

I appreciate you bringing it up, though, because a lot of people don't know about our login site and I can see how the add-to-cart for prices system of our normal site might be annoying.

As long as the price is good I'm happy with that (from a 3rd party vendo)r. Audio Deluxe usually gives a good deal, and then a bonus in the cart.

But on an actual Dev's site it's a little bit irritating.

Yes me too! I usually do the rounds to see where is the best price is. I've had a few very good deals on Sweetwater as well.

With my experience this is the behavior with all shops providing discounts. Shops like Wavesuniverse, JRR Shop, Plugindiscount, Audiodeluxe (?)... You must be logged in to see the price, sometimes you must put stuff in the cart to see the discount etc.
As Eric wrote, this seems to be a restriction by the vendors and not because the shop people are crazy

Not a big problem IMO.

As I said I don't mind having to login to see prices, but having to put stuff in the cart means I can quickly have a cart with 1,000s worth of stuff in it and sometimes, when I visit a site even after a few days it's still there. On occasion I have been close to buying something and realised the cart has something extra in from checking out a price earlier that I didn't actually want to buy - it's just a bad practice imho. It would be better if they had a price check button if they wanted to keep it from open viewing but putting it in your shopping cart is just asking for problems at some point.

I too this week was annoyed by Voxengo's no prices thing. I have no problem with end retailers having to play MAP games and needing hoops to see the final prices on products. But when I'm at the developer's own website I'm not really there to buy, I'm looking to learn about the product. Given the vast range of prices for music software I at least expect a developer to be able to tell me the MSRP/List price without having to add it to a shopping cart. I just need a price benchmark, since it instantly tells me if this is a product I need to waste any more time looking at.

To be fair to Voxengo, their prices are discounted the more you add to the cart, as well as on the basis of what you already own. They also have a full pricelist page accessible via their shop page.
