I need to bump this one, as this is major important IMO (and I got another note of this with a music related newsletter).
This could clear, why a lot of people are getting "false flags" recently. Or why certain artists were "featured", while the (IMO great) alternative musicians never got any real coverage.
One thing is for sure - another reason for me NOT to get on SC. Especially not if you look at disasters like with the GEMA and Youtube here in Germany (videos are still area blocked!) - which may(!) also happen to SC. Or the thing that happened with Instagram (the "your photos don't belong to you" thing).
I'm not even touching the possibility of C&D letters you might get if you upload music that "may contain copyrighted material" (bots, false-flags) - even if it's your own creation. We're talking about Warner, one of the biggest players in the music industry. I mean, Sony Germany was in the media again on the topic mass adhortatory letter (with Bushido's recent album "Sonny Black"). And we are(!) technically talking about a filesharing/song sharing platform, which SC clearly is!
So, be cautious!
And sadly, there goes another page where you could upload your own content to present it to the world. I remember similar happening with MP3.com. And wasn't Spotify also "from users for users" before it got bought up?
Personal summary:
I will stick to my own webspace. Even if that means
- less listeners
- less "mass distribution" (heck, SC upload has been "bundled" with every other host these days)
- being locked out of various song challenges
But at least I don't have to battle bots, or "pay for the capability to offer more downloads" and what have you. I only need to clear things with the GEMA from person to person, should I upload a (cover) song that is listed in their database. Though only If I can get some usable information out of that one (the system is not really the best to use).
Back to square one I'd say.

It seems to me all of this new technology offers fantastic opportunities. If only you're willing to make certain compromises when it comes to things like I.P, security, privacy, etc. But it's a false choice because the vast majority are going to just say "Whatever, let me use Internet 3.0!" and accept pretty much any TOS.

Never embraced SC fully. I actually never liked much about it. I quit bothering with it a few months ago with a track that was bass-heavy that sounded really crap on it and I don't feel like 'remastering' for that low a quality stream, and trying to guess towards it. If I cared about exposure through that I would have geared towards that by now.
If I cared about 'monetizing' I guess I would care about Warner and what that means. I don't care about SC at all though. Most of my things on there haven't suffered THAT much but I don't feel like I have time to worry about it if it's going to suck ass like that one did. I like that mix, that's how that's supposed to be, I don't need 128kbps and it isn't me doing the squooshing.
Warner is very avid about their shit. I have one video that is blocked in the UK and possibly in Europe that I think is Warner's doing. Although some other entity I could not even locate made a youtube claim. Warner Group dropped their claim on my video more than once, this other entity defaulted to my dispute every time by never responding. I think it's a spurious claim. I don't even understand why the thing is blocked, it isn't in the US. Warner Group dropped their claim, full stop.
Everything I ever uploaded to SC was grabbed by some entity and put on their site, for sale. There is no privacy or security, fuggeddabouddit.

I've said the EXACT same thing for a while now. That it will only be a matter of time before they sell out and be bought, just like mp3.com. The track record for popular mp3 sites is ALWAYS the same. Once an MP3 site gets 'big' they will and have always sold out. Record companies don't want alot of free music going out, period, even if it is legal it seems.I remember similar happening with MP3.com
