Setup for Live Performance

Hi there
I'm relatively new to software synthesizing and have used my hardware Synthesizer in the past. I need a setup which I can use to access my vst's during our gigs and switch between them while playing. What hardware/software do I ned for this?
I already have a keyboard (JX8P and a K2000) and a midi to USB cable to my MacBook Pro. In the past I've then connected the Mac headphone output directly to our PA which showed to result in weak and noisy sound. I've just bought a FireOne audio card, to improve the latency and hopefully produce some better sound.
Lately I've used a lot the Tassman VST but was unable to switch between the different instruments nor could I save mid MidiLearn settings. Any inputs, how I could do this? I think it should be possible with any DAW to change between predefined setups, but I found the one's I've tested (reaper and ableton live) too unintuitive to use them on the fly.
Any thoughts on additional pieces for my setup?

You need
https://www.apple.com/mainstage/ (mac)
or
http://www.cantabilesoftware.com/ (pc)
http://www.brainspawn.com/ (pc)
...and some guts to use that live
I know many do it, but I won't rely on computers live. I always like this video-series about David Rosenthal's (Billy Joel) live setup. He uses Macs, Receptors and has everything double as a backup. Even for his iPad. And next to 5 computers, he also has a backup soundset programmed in his hardware synts
And he doesn't even use the macs for VSTs, the receptors run Komplete. The Macs only do mainstage to control the rest

I personally would try using a computer live-quad core laptops now start at $300. Take precautions for the power supply, and use stable plugins. A receptor is a $2000 dual core computer that can't handle midi effects.
After the show you can do other stuff on it!

Ableton (possibly wit Push) is a dedicated solution to record and launch clips as well as switch between different plugins. It's not cheap, though... but proposed stuff for Mac is neither, and you will need some hardware to perform on stage anyway.

I use the mentioned brainspawn forte software with a quad i7 Lenovo laptop loaded with 2 SSD's (one OS/plugins, one samples) and a Steinberg UR22 interface.
Works great for me. I have backup sounds programmed into my synths/controllers in case of emergency to have something in case of catastrophe, but never had to use it so far.
Normally my Kawai ES100 and Novation X Station are only used as MIDI controllers, with their sound muted.
I've been playing live using VSTs since 2009 using various hardware.
