Has Orion been discontinued, it's not on the website anymore?

Post

Wow it's not!!

Post

I read at the Orion forum a few weeks back, richard pulled it while they work on the new version.
We plan to put Orion 8.6 into public beta very soon, so development is still active. :)

Before putting it back into the shop, we want to give it a major overhaul though, perhaps even rewrite from scratch (some code is now 10+ years old, quite a lot for software). So no promises on when that'll happen, it could take a good while.

Good to know he is still developing it. I switched to Cubase last year and am pleased as punch, but still hold a soft spot for Orion (since I used it for at least a decade).

Post

Similar as VitaminD, there's something very 'immediate' about working with Orion that brings me back to it from time to time.

For some reason this host attracts me. I tried a demo a while back and thought that it must be good for repetitive pattern based stuff.

However there are some improtatnt features missing and I finally decided that it is overpriced considering the competition and the apparent lack of development. It is good to know that it is not abandoned.
You may think you can fly ... but you better not try

What would those features be recursive?
100 High Quality Soundsets: Omnisphere 2, Dune 3, Tone 2 Synths, Pigments, Uhe Synths, Halion, Spire, and others.

The demo I tried didn't have freeze (it was about version 7, i don't remember exactly, maybe they added it since then). There were also issues with handling multiout plugins

it'd take a lot to make it compete and replace any of the current powerhouses as a main DAW, but I think Orion would be a very popular lower priced alternative 'sketchpad' as it currently is.
(just mho of course.. not trying to devalue effort, just think it'd pick up a larger audience)

Both issues have been addressed in beta for a loooooooong time. Cant say ive had to use freeze once, but its there.

He should release the beta some day. I keep hearing about that beta but I can't d/l it. I'll wait for 8.6 but I moved to Tracktion now.

I also have a soft spot for Orion, as it was my first DAW and still has the best "step sequencer" around. However, it certainly falls behind when compared to most other DAW's, in that it doesn't have wave stretching for example, instead you have to paste each instance of your samples. And it also doesn't have volume and FX enveloping, of which most DAW's have, instead you have to use automation, which is rather fussy. If as aformentioned, that they may to do a complete overhaul of Orion, then I hope that they will consider adding those two features. But not just an overhaul, they had better add a few more bells and whistles, as there is stiff competition in the ranks. Also, I once read an article in Computer Music Magazine when they were reviewing the best DAW's of the time, where they voted Ableton Live as the better choice between the two, because they did not like that you had to switch back and forth between the sequencer and the main interface in Orion. Personally, I didn't mind that so much, but then after switching to Reaper I found that my workflow has definately improved. But if they should continue the developement of Orion and bring it back up to speed, I would be happy to return to it.

Why you bring this old thread up again? Orion is def history! It's discontinued!!!
Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.

oRION IS HISTORY, Fl studio is the "ultimate" *pattern based* Virtual Studio from this kind of DAW.
