How much time to play

Just wondering, with all these new/old toys to play with (vsti's) what do you lot do for real jobs (if working) and how do you find the time to play with them all ?
I personally feel to get very little time, I am over erm.. over 40 years old, have an 8 to 5 job in a warehouse and when I get home, if I spent all evening staring at my computer with headphones on I would get a right bollocking off my other half.
Anyone care to elaborate ?

My wife and I have completely different sleep cycles. She needs a lot of it, and I get by on much less. Generally speaking, the time from about 10:30 pm to about 2:00 am is my time. Most nights, the wife, kids and dog are asleep by 10:00 or so.
Now, that doesn't mean I'm productive all that time. It depends greatly on how much wine I'm sipping and how tired I actually am.
But, the way I figure it, it has effectively kept me off the analyst's couch for a lot of years.
Cheers

I play pretty intensely, so one hour is plenty per day. You don't want to know what I do in real life.

The most ambitious thing I got to do when I was a working stiff I was able to do out of getting fired. My memory is fuzzy but it would make sense if I got the idea I could do it following getting fired. I had a solid two weeks to put the show together and for some reason the people that usually used the studio weren't, or mostly weren't occupying it.
I was exhausted physically and most of what I did was improv sessions. I was living with a band, that wasn't my band.
I retired early due to insanity (gov't pays me to not go postal), I'm free to do music on the computer at any time now.

I don't have much time to play, either (full time job, family, etc.). Unfortunately, purchasing new VST instruments and effects ends up being a proxy for time to actually use what I have. It's faster to click the buy button than carve out a few hours to make music, and it scratches the itch - but only temporarily.

I work as a data project manager for a cable company, and generally leave the house at 7am to drop my daughter at school then get home around 6pm.
Once my daughter is in bed I spend some time with my wife and then might get time to play after that, perhaps 9pm or later.
The only thing I can really do it play keyboards, electric guitar or bass though, as everything else is too loud.
Weekends are variable, but I can play a lot of other instruments that make noise.
Haven't been playing much for a while due to a pinched nerve, but in the past week or so I've been sitting on the couch with a 25 key controller and screwing around with some things that might evolve into a complete piece of music.

I only play in Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. We're taking over your town.

This describes me as well. I wouldn't have a giant wall of Eurorack modules if I actually had time to use this stuff. Come to think of it, I bought my last module several months ago and still haven't even found the time to install it!bharris22 wrote:I don't have much time to play, either (full time job, family, etc.). Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

I got a new job a few months ago that works on a 3 cycle shift so I work a different shift every week on rotation (1 week of days, 1 week of nights, 1 week of evenings and so on) so my sleep pattern is all over the place. I find it really hard to spend time on music and try find time for everything else. Any free time i get I want to try spend it with Family and Friends so when I do get time to do anything music related I try and make it easier for myself the next time I get a chance to go on the computer by making templates in my DAW and organising everything I use, so that from the second I sit down to when I finish I am being productive. There is nothing worse than finally getting a chance to sit down with your DAW and you spend it on youtube haha.

I spend my time doing something productive-either recording audio or video, playing until I can't physically play anymore, or making software. My stomach usually hurts and I can't do anything slowly and still enjoy it.
