What are the psychological roots behind the "X vs Y" arguments?

We have seen so many of these "vs" threads in the past.
It can be "Analog vs Digital", "Hardware vs Software", "Mac vs PC", "ITB vs OTB", "product X vs product Y" or anything else really. No matter what forum we are talking about, these type of threads keep popping up like an ugly zit's to teenagers face, and they also seem to be just as much wanted. Many very useful discussions have been ruined by people who lure other forum members with their out of topic arguments, which turns the original thread into another "jerk of the month" competition. A lot of bad blood in this forum is just because for some reason a person has a need to prove that something he has got is better so much better than what the other guy has.
This somehow reminds me of my own childhood because I can remember myself and some other children behave that way too, but that was when we were children. This "My dad (or daw) is better than yours" should not be part of our way to handle things as a grown ups. For sure it seems a little bit childish to me.
It also surprises me that so many people seem to loose their self control for such little things as differing opinion about a product and start to insult each others. Wouldn't it be better to try to avoid topics that make it hard for you to interact others in a peaceful manner? I am a really hot headed guy myself in "real life" and I am still having a hard time understanding why people loose their self control so easily on a internet forum. We got the privilege of having all the time in the world to think about what to write here, or what not to write, and still many of us fail to maintain their reason when they get angry.
What are the psychological roots behind of "X vs Y" arguments?
It's a really interesting question to me as it seems that the "vs" threads are often very capable of bringing out some of the worse parts in our personalities.

In the year 12,447 BCE, caveman Grogg said to caveman Yarg, "My club is better than your club." And so began the gear comparison discussions....

Guess it's just reflection of our society, from consumerism via corporate/industry standards to pure selfish egoistic outbursts, egoistic artist's that became consumers and customers that are in constant need of evaluation and proving themselves, their opinions and choices, internet being main medium of communication with world and I guess someones actual world, when one can do many things without consequences and be whatever he think he is without real world fear, so I guess in some way, that's who they are really, give them freedom and they will be whatever they really are.

After years of "Analog vs Digital" threads I feel like this whenever I see more of them emerging.

You are confusing two different concepts. One is the fact that on a large international forum with thousands of members, some people will find things to argue about.
The other is that a music production forum should contain discussions comparing different approaches to music production. Seems normal to me....

Now tell me what should I buy to get more girls? Spire? Hive? Sylenth1? Dune 2? Serum?
(I already have Synthmaster, I'm still exploring all features, haven't been in a club for ages...)

Yes, it's quite ironic that I took it from a manufacturer who makes the legendary analog filter unit: Sherman Filterbank 2.
I always loved their logo as I imagined that it's some of my neighbour going insane after listening me making that "perfect" kick for two hours.

I don't think I have been confusing anything here.deastman wrote:You are confusing two different concepts. One is the fact that on a large international forum with thousands of members, some people will find things to argue about.

It's normal to discuss these things, but in my opinion relying on name calling etc because you think your analog synth is so much better than someones softsynth (goes to opposite way too) is not.
I enjoy good discussion but often things get really heated and we see proofs of this once in a while when threads get locked.

I have synthmaster, Spire and Serum and I plan to buy Dune 2 and Hive later. I say that synths doesn't get you girls, the trick is to get a girl to get you the synths.Tricky-Loops wrote:Now tell me what should I buy to get more girls? Spire? Hive? Sylenth1? Dune 2? Serum?
