I make all photo manipulation in PS and then import photos into Illustrator where I basically do all the rest.
At the bottom of the project there is a list of freebies I have used. Some of them I've discovered in the last month or so, and these guys with free photos are particularly inspiring

I work graphic design professionally and unfortunately have little time for music lately.

Regarding your point about workflow, I guess it's the matter of habits. Usually I spend 90% of time in Illustrator. I feel more comfortable here and like to fine adjust layout in it. Also Illustrator works better with rendering text, and editing fonts. On the other hand, as I know Illustrator is 8bit vector software, and I am always in question do photos look worse when loaded into Illustrator than in PS...
