Related variation on a previous phrase

hi, one of my most usual workflows is that I come up with a 4 bar phrase that I really like but then I need to develop a variation on said phrase e.g. perhaps a repetition of the first 2 bars with a variation on the second which will tie nicely to the repetition of the full 8 bar phrase.
Just got RC recently and I'm working myself through all the tutorials , videos etc , so maybe what I'm looking for is all there but I would appreciate it if somebody could guide me as to how to achieve what I want above.
thanks

Typically to achieve this goal and so not to lose my original phrase, I will create a copy of the first phrase and paste it somewhere in the track. I think you are on Mac, right? So, click on the phrase and then <CMD>C/<CMD>V will work - Be sure to click where you want to paste otherwise RC pastes on top. You can still move the phrase where you want it by dragging it.)
Then, if you will notice there is a <1> at the top left of the phrase (on the composition page).
Click the right button and now you will have variation <2>.
If you right click the phrase you will open the Phrase Dialog panel and inside this you can make many types of adjustments for many variations.
You wouldn't yet know but a long time ago, Attila, the developer of RC, made "Right click" our most important friend in RC.

I'm also a new Rapid Composer user and this topic has great interest for me.
I have Rapid Composer Full version 2.73 built Sep 15, 2014.
@dsan: I'm not seeing a <1> in the phrase. Are you perhaps referring to a generator?
Here's what I'm doing:
1. Open the Phrase browser. Drag and drop "Samples -> Generic -> PianoSample01 [4 beats]" to the Composition.
2. Right click on the phrase and add the "Remove Note" variation. I change the Selection from "Note At Index" to "Random Note". A note disappears from the phrase which is expected and desired.
All is sweetness and light so far.
Now, I would like to right click somewhere on the phrase and have the "Remove Note" variation randomly remove another note.
Can this be done? Not just with the "Remove Note" variation but all variations that have been added to the phrase.
Many thanks to Attila for Rapid Composer. Very powerful. Lots of fun.

@chardin: Welcome to Rapid Composer and to the forum
Yes, a generator will give the option <1> to be able to make a variation by clicking the arrows. Clicking the right arrow will give you a new variation (numbered accordingly) while clicking the left arrow will move you to the previous variation, with <1> being the original, obviously
.
Once you have rendered a generator you are no longer able to create new variations (the <1> disappears). Rendering applies the variations to the phrase and converts the notes to absolute notes.
In your example (1.) the phrase is no longer a generator but a render of a generator so you will not see the <1>. You cannot make additional variations of rendered phrases in the same way as previouslyt describe. However, see below for alternate ways to create variations of a rendered phrase.
In testing the "Remove Note" algorythm, it seems you can only remove a random note once, effectively; however, you can add as many "Remove Note" variations as you want.
Open the dialog (right click on the phrase) and select the arrow tool displaying the notes (just after the wand tool). Now click on "Add..." (at the bottom left) and add the "Remove Note" and set it to "Random Note". Now add another "Remove Note" and select "At Index" (which should be the default). Now move the slider (slowly) and watch the notes disappear/reappear as you adjust the slider.
This way you can specify which note to remove.
Adding another "Remove Note"/"Random Note" will also work if you prefer.
Yes, it appears the remove note command is global to all the phrases within the specific generator.
You can still continue to add variation controls to the rendered phrase; remove note, stacc-leg, mirror, etc.

I wanted to add, Rapid Composer is unbelievably powerful. It has so much packed into it and Attila has even more plans for adding features.
Just play around with it as much as you can to understand it and find the hidden gems.
TBH, I mess around with "what does this do" and "how does this work" so much that I rarely actually get a compostion done.
The more you dive into RC the more you're gonna love it!
Don't forget to download Yellukhans contributions too while you're at it
Great inspiration; the phrases he has provided!

Hello chardin,
welcome to this forum!

If you want to remove another note, you need to add another "Remove Note" variation to the phrase. You can add "Remove Note", or "Double Note" to the track which will make interesting rhythmic variations on all phrases.
I would suggest the following to every newbie: download the attached composition from this post (VelocityProblem.zip): http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 4#p6017294
Add "Double Note" and "Remove Note" to the track and see how the rhythm changes. I wrote this in another post: Die-hard users can add 2 Double Note's
Try this: "Double Note" set to "Before Time 4", and another "Double Note" set to "Note At Index 1". As you move the sliders, the rhythm changes. I enjoyed this composition, thank you Paul!
Thanks,
Attila
