Actually this was one reason I moved to Mac, I found it a pain to setup reliably on Windows for my iPad and had to resort to a third party tool (Connectify) in the end to avoid dropouts.

yes, there is nothing like wired midi! as you already have a midi interface attached to your pc you would need only one of course

regarding powered usb hubs: iPads don't deliver too much power via cck that's why many keyboards and controllers have to be connected via a powered usb hub!
