Good news for the "late participants" that might have heard of the Mix Challenge just now. In agreement with Paul Stevenson, we extend the KVR Mix Challenge 09 by additional 3 days to Friday, 08-MAY-2015, 11:59pm PDT.

You were stuck on time so far? Now is your chance to finish your mix.
As of this moment, we have 11 entries (can we exceed 20 this month?)

Additional to that, we're currently finalizing the source material for KVR MC10, which will probably start within the next 48 hours in an own thread. We will shortly announce this on Twitter as well.

Nice song. I enjoyed mixing it. Here is my mix:

Fairly significant EQ on the drums and gates on the Toms. A good bit of editing on the vocals to control sibilance mostly.

I worked in Cubase Elements 8, using it's own strip plugins for the most part.

Main vocals: Heavy de-essing and volume automation, then regular compression and EQ, some limiting and tape saturation. Finally some reverb from Verberate.
Vocal Main 2: Similar approach, less drastic settings.
Vocal ahh's: noise gate for debreathing, hi-passed at 400Hz.
Piano: Lot's of high end, some reverb.
Orchestral: Boosted at 200Hz and high end of side channel. Then lot's of Cubase's Stereo Enhancer and reverb.
Ebow guitar: Mid-cut and placed far to the right, so although it's fairly low in the mix can still be heard clearly.
Drive guitars: a little boost on the high end of low guitars. No compression at all. I used juuuust a little touch of autopan for movement. It seemed appropriate...
Synth arp: Hi-passed at 1KHz!! Distortion added from P&M Analoger. Narrowed down it's stereo field and placed it a little on the left. Some limiting added.
Synth bass: Cut out the mids and used a little autopan.
Bass guitar: TSE BOD used for EQ shaping and distortion. DynamicEQ for keeping the lows in check, then lot's of compression.
Bang drums: Not much processing, I just got a balance I liked, added some reverb, and softened the attacks a little with Cubase's Envelope Shaper.
Regular drums: Gated the toms and boosted their lows. Snare got it's release stage boosted with Envelope Shaper to sound bigger, then got through some tube saturation, limiting, and reverb. I boosted a lot the attack of the kick, and gave it some sub-bass with P&M Clarisonix. Then the whole drum buss got some tape saturation.

Finally, TDR-Kotelnikov on the master buss compressed 1.5db, and TB Barricade made sure the level was according to the contest's guidelines.

Here is my mix, a pleasure to work with quality material.

I listened to the original mix on time, then I let it sleep, and when I started the mix, I read the guidelines, and I ended to put a very slight reverb on the voice to keep it very dry and straightforward, finally when I listened back to the original I heard some delays and reverbs, but I decided to let it more dry as I ended up to love the results... After 5 may, when I listened again to my mix and decided to change a bunch of smalls things, mainly in EQ and compression... and here is my mix :)

-I used a console emulation plug on every track, and another one on every busses. sometimes I monoized the low end of stereo instruments.

- The intro kicks where EQed to remove low end
- The kick is EQed too, to remove some lows and boost the highs
- The snare has EQ and is clipped
- the room got EQ
- the toms got EQ
- the bass guitar got EQ, multi band compression, 1176 style compression, analog limiting, and pulltech EQ
- the bass synth got bass boost and highs exciting, mono low end and smear of the high end
- the intro electric guitar got EQ and tape
- the high elec guitar got EQs
- the disto guitar got EQs
- the piano got EQs, compression, harmonic exciter
- the orchestral track got saturation
- the synth arp got limiting and exciters
- the voice have gate, opto compression, chorus, reverb, exciter, mutiband dynamics, de-esser, EQs, tape, limiting, leveller
- the backing voice has stereo enhancer
- the chorus voices have gate, opto compression, reverb, exciter, multiband dynamics

- the drum bus is compressed dbx160 style, and go through a tape sim
- the basses bus is ducked by the kick with a sidechain multiband compressor
- the music bus is high passed and got parallel multiband saturation
- on the mix bus is Fairchild style compression and modern digital compression for a few dB, EQ correction for mixing room, saturation, spectral band cut

I wish a good luck to all participants ! :tu:

It's the 9th May, and the (first) mixing round of the KVR MC#09 has ended.

If you want to fine tune your reports, now if your time. Please watch this spot for the evaluation.

Just a quick one to inform the participants, that this thread is not abandoned.

The "client" (Paul) has been knocked out health wise the last couple of days, but he already listened to the tracks and is in the process of writing down notes.

Please watch this spot.

A short update on things:
I have to put the evaluation "on hold". I tried to get in touch with the client (Paul Stevenson) several times at this point. But got no further answer so far, which is slowly worrying me a bit.

I know this is not an ideal situation, and I'm terribly sorry about the outcome.
Please don't delete/abandon your projects yet. We try to get this sorted out in a timely manner.

This is disappointing. I put a lot of time into this mix as I'm sure did all others.

No input from the author since the beginning. Very strange. If Paul is having serious health issues then my sympathy. On the other hand if he bailed...

Perhaps Compyfox can review the entries?

Post

I will try to reach the "client" again.
If I don't get any answer by Friday, I'm sure we'll find a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Short info - he is well.

contacted him through two channels now. Apparently, there were technical issues.
I'll see how this goes and keep you informed.
