I'm just curious, what do people feel is the best tool for converting sample CD's?

I tried the free version of Translator as well as CDXtract to convert Symphony Of Voices (Akai) for use with Kompakt. I like to have the programs and samples in one massive file, instead of having a million .wav files strewn all over the hard drive so I decided to go for SF2 or Giga as the format.

However using both programs I noticed this:
When converting, no matter if the destination format was Kontakt, SF2 or Giga ( tried all the formats Kompakt could load), they never converted the programs right! I compared by loading the original Akai program in the first slot and the other 3 in the slots below, and the envelopes and filter were completely off compared to the original.

For instance, the attack portion of the ADSR envelope, varied from 450 to 1800ms (!) between the three formats, while the original program had an attac on 250 or 300ms. The R portion was in many instances way up so it had several seconds release while the original program had a fairly short release time.
This is way off and actually dramatically alters the programs.

I don't know if this could be a Kompakt issue, but it's nevertheless extremely annoying.

What is a Kompakt or SL 2 issue is that if I load a song with Kompakt using Akai samples from several disks, Kompakt (or SL 2?) doesn't refresh the CD drive when loading the song, so I have to abort the loading when switching disks since it can't find the samples, and reload the program in the Kompakt instances once the song is loaded in Cubase. Quite annoying.

But anyhoo, it'd be interesting to hear from people with other samplers if you experience the same thing?

Strange thing you're trying to do! Once the Akai sounds are converted, save them in the native Kompakt (or SL2) format and store them on your hard disk. They will load faster and will be easier to find next time you'll need them.

Well, like I said I don't want a million .wav files stored on my hard drive and anyways I think it's a bug in Kompakt, but as usual the Kompakt forum and its moderators are extremely quiet about these things.
Say I store an Akai program which is 31.5MB in native Kompakt format. When I reopen the Kompakt program, Kompakt tells me the size of it is a whopping 7MB. Where the other 24.5MB vanished is quite hard to get NI to explain, but nevertheless, that means it's no option for me.

I converted SOV from Akai to Gig format myself, and it seemed to be fine... but I'm using Giga though. I used Giga to convert to Giga as well. I wouldn't try to be doing a double conversion, as usually a single conversion screws stuff up enough in the first place. ;) Translator from my old experience, sucked, now that I think about it. I had a EMu disk I tried to convert, and like 1 in 5 banks would even have any sound. Some of the Miroslav stuff, again, no sound, but that was only a few banks.
