I just found this free tool which compresses wav files to about half their size and thought I'd share - handy for archiving mastered tracks or samples on CD

just make sure you don't lose the decompression tool!

Good link. I have used this for several years:

As I have a number of CDs burned with this, I'll stick to it. Your point about saving the tool is good also. It is small enough that I burn it onto most of the CDs where I store the WAV files.

Take Care

I have used mkwACT to compress CD-quality wav files to shn prior to archiving for years. Never given me any trouble.

For files at higher than CD quality, I've used LPAC with similar reliability.

That said, I hope to upgrade to a DVD-R soon so that lossless compression before archiving won't be necessary.

The open source, cross platform flac is also a great lossless compresser and it's free. You can read about it or download it from here:

Apple also released their own lossless compressor in the newest version of iTunes. It might be a good bet for you if you mainly use macs.

Just for those that may not know allready: WinRar compresses almost as good as any other tool. And it's pretty much a standard format. Works exceptionally well with 24bit files.
I often use it in case a certain project doesn't fit on a single CD anymore.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.
