"The Shape of Jazz to Come" and "Free Jazz" are probably two of the best jazz albums made in the mid 20th century. Much of what happened in jazz after that probably wouldn't have happened the same way if it wasn't for him.
Sweet child in time...

I saw him with the "electric band" in 1978 in NYC. If Stewie was to come around with his time machine I would wanna go back to see one of those gigs with the quartet in the early 60s.

His influence might not be as obvious to youngsters nowadays (although there was a Simpsons episode that I recall he was in) but it's fair to say that a whole generation of musicians of around my age, including the likes of Pat Metheny and John Zorn, admired him, did covers of his tunes, and in some cases got to play and record with him.

RIP

That's sad.

First heard of him when galaxie 500 nicked 'this is our music' as an album title then his work on the Naked Lunch soundtrack. Opened up a lot of music for me.

Absolute genius! A life well worth celebrating.

Do yourself a favor if you haven't already, and check out Science Fiction...

One of the more recent performances of perhaps his most famous composition Lonely Woman.

And a rather playful version by one of those who owe so much to the great one.
