Waldorf Largo Appreciation

This is also a "Bargain Center" thing, as Largo has been knocked down to something like $169 US at the Waldorf site, and let me tell you that is a freeking killer price for this synth.
I have been wondering whether anyone has gone far toward fully exploring the capabilities of this synth, the modulation possibilities are mind boggling. Four layers, each with different matrices and filters, a ton of classic Waldorf waveshapes. Sure, you can't import wavetables, but there's Nave for that (an oh so capable synth in its own right, and more than complementary...buy 'em both).
Talk about a synth with practically no presets showcasing its potential...it's interesting to me how comparatively little love this synth receives on KVR. Perhaps it's because it is very characterful, oh so "Waldorf"-ian.

I can't get enough of "that" Waldorf sound, I'm going back and forth between Largo and Nave all the time now. Largo also really excels at atmospheric patches, I've been really building mine up with all the layers at my disposal.Naenyn wrote:I love it .. the bass that thing can make .. and the filters ..Definitely a stand-out synth.

If you guys like Largo and bass get Plughugger's Large Bass Expander - one of my favourite Largo banks and some of the best bass patches I've heard

Hiya Apostate!
Largo is awesome indeed. Very nice that the 64-bit versions are out and mostly very stable. Largo is definitely one of the synths out there that gets forgotten more often than it should.

Did not find it too. Seems to be a quite old soundset from 2009.masterhiggins wrote:Not seeing it. Just checked the Waldorf Online Shop and there seem to be a lot more soundsets for Blofeld (around 15) than for Largo (only 3 athe moment). The latest one for Largo in the Online Shop is from Daniel Krawietz who is also workin as the quality assurance manager for Waldorf since last year (and a lot has happened and still happens since then).
For PPG Wave 3.V there are even only 2 soundsets in the shop including mine. 2 other commercial soundsets i got for PPG 3.V were done for both PPG 2.V and 3.V while ther also seems to be at least a few patches that are for 3.V only and using the new features like e.g. new wavetables and effects.
Personally for Largo i only made free patches available at the KVR database so far (besides some new ones i had started) while i got a soundset for Blofeld and PPG Wave 3.V at the shop. Guess it's time to do soundsets for Largo and Nave (which i actually started but am not close to be finished yet). I am also interested in doing another one for Blofeld and also Pulse 2 (i did a bunch of factory presets for Pulse 2).
From last year until recently i had to invest too much time with testing for the Waldorf plugins (instead of doing sound design) while i at least managed to do a smaller (not 128 patches) free bank for PPG Wave 2.V and 3V (for 3.V ther are some additional ones).
Seems to be difficult to just focus on only one of those synths as they are all great in their own way...
Anyway for PPG 3.V i mad ea factory bank, a commercial one and a free one so a new bank for this is lower priority at the moment.

That's weird, have they pulled it, it was one of their best soundsets?masterhiggins wrote:Not seeing it. Ingo,
Do you know if Waldorf is planning to incorporate custom wavetable a for Largo and/or PPG Wave? I know Nave does this, but Largo also does VA, whereas Nave doesn't. And Nave doesn't have the PPG filter. Has this been a popular request?

That would be terrific imo, but I'm wondering if it might be a lost cause. Even the early reviews for Largo were decrying the lack of this. I just use Nave or one of my other, multitudinous "wave synths".masterhiggins wrote:Ingo,

When I wrote to Waldorf asking about the (apparently arbitrary) Controls, Daniel from the support team told me there were no plans for updates for Largo at this time. But I imagine Ingo might be able to tell us more specifics. I'm curious when the last update was on this synth.
In the meantime, the Waldorf sound has become an obsession for me, I don't even use Serum half as much anymore. Largo and Nave.

Concerning Nave a new update 1.1 currently is work in progress. Additional features were already proposed during the Beta but this is not so simple to add while i hope this will be done in a future update.masterhiggins wrote:Ingo,

Concerning Largo AFAIK it is possible that a bigger update will come in the future but i do not know any details about it yet.
Anyway i do not think that Waldorf plans to do one synth that has all the features of teh other while the Blofed somehow is already like Largo (synth engines are mostly identical) with additional features like sample playback, PPG filter mode and import for user wavetables.
FWIW after just having sold my Virus TI desktop i am curently using some samples of the TI Hypersaw (At different detune amounts), a few samples of the JP-8000 Supersaw in Diva and also some user waveables based on wavetables i had done with Audio Term (originally created for PPG Wavemapper 2).
Currently besides the Beta for Attack for iOS and finishing e.g. the nw1 Eurorack module Waldorf seems to be focusing on some updates for their hardware synths and all plugins will be checked for necessary updates after that (including what was already reported at the bugs database concerning feature requests and possible remaining bugs).
You could be sure that sooner or later all products (those that were not discontinued) will receive updates where necessary.
The updates for Nave are more or less independent from the other Waldorf products as those are mostly done by Rolf Wöhrmann from TempoRubato (while Stefan Stenzel from Waldorf was/is involved with development too like with almost any Waldorf product...).

Yes, as I mentioned Largo and Nave are obviously complementary. It's a bit like the PPG Wavegenerator/'mapper, it's best to buy both. That's why it's currently a great time to pick up Largo, I've never seen the price so low. I bought it from Sweetwater at over $250 US and that was a bit much, especially considering there isn't any import. 149 Euros makes it cheaper than Serum, and to me that makes it a no brainer, as you'll get just as much use out of Largo...well, I got as much use for it, sorry for the unequivocation.
If you're into "THAT Waldorf sound" at all, they're both essential. I haven't delved into the PPG Wave 3 much yet (am still considering purchasing it). I'd have to find things about it that would make up for things my other "wave synths" lack. It's an excellent synth anyway.

After having sold a bunch of plugins and two hardware synths i am currently focusing on my Waldorf synths (both the plugins and the hardware synths like Blofeld and Pulse 2). Additionally also the softsynths from Tone2 (especially Saurus 2 and Electra 2.1), Xils Lab (got most of them except MiniSyn'X) and some single synths like Diva and Wavestation are what i currently call "essential" for me.Apostate wrote: In the meantime, the Waldorf sound has become an obsession for me, I don't even use Serum half as much anymore. If i dig deeper into those in the near future there is hardly time for others while with some of those i already did so many patches that those are lower priority concerning doing new patches at the moment (especially PPG Wave 3.V, Saurus and Rayblaster).

Large Bass Expander was the first soundset I made under my own brand. Not bad, but a bit all over the place. I hade a firesale of it about 1-2 years ago before I took it away. Nave looks incredibly cool - but I am so sucked-into-another-dimension with Omnisphere 2 that I barely have time for anything else.
