Auditioning Effects in Reason 8

With Reason 6.5 I can browse effects patches in the mixer and audition anything I want without loading anything. I cannot find a way to do this in Reason 8. did they take this essential feature out?

I've not moved to 8 from 7 because 8 seems to be nothing but visual changes for the sake of change (like the stupid flat UI fad), but I recall lots of people complaining about the preset browser being ruined in 8. Supposedly the 8.1(?) update changed that, so make sure you're up to date.

They re-introduced auditioning of patches at some point, but it works a little different from Before. You need to make sure that the device you're browsing from is highlighted from the browser (usually by pressing the browse button on the device) From there on, without changing focus or anything you should now be able to use the cursor keys on your keyboard, and as you step down (or up) in the browser, that patch will be loaded.

In 8.2 or 8.3. they also added a "revert" patch state, like from the old browser where you could work on a patch, audition some other patches in the same device, and then revert to that state. (In Reason 7 you did this by simply clicking cancel from the old browser window).

I don't know. Heard this before, I guess because everything else is f...n' fun/creative/stable and productive there is nothing to miss since 8 is where I started. Me thinks though that the browser is currently not the part people like the most (then again, people really hated the version 9 browser in live which I got on with fine)

8.4 is in the works. Maybe something of focus? Go to reasontalk and put in your 2c. They seem to be paying attention to that.

a easier way to create tuplets and so on like how Reaper does it! people complain about Reapers piano roll but it's my favorite. in Reason you can't drag the notes like in this pic.. you have to type in numbers in the tools window!

NOTHING remotely like Ezdrummer or Addictive drums. there is a big difference between those two and the type of stuff you can do with ANYTHING that you can currently use in Reason. I'm talking about realistic faster drumming stuff where it doesn't sound like a machine gun. I have tried and heard all the expansions. not the same as ez or ad.. For what I do. Please add one of those two.

Add a Jam Origin Midi Guitar RE or something that does the same exact thing or I can't use it.

I don't like the look of the new interface at all. I know someone worked hard on it but it's not even close to the older look. the older look was way better. for me. all preference of course. allow us to use the older theme with the updated options and PLEASE add back the auditioning of effects and sounds! what the hell.

I know there are a few other things for me but this stuff would be enough.

A work around for this in Reason would be to create the notes you want to transform within a clip, and then ctrl+drag to stretch/shrink the whole clip. For and example, you paint a 3 bar long clip and put three notes after each other, they are each one bar in length. You then ctrl+drag the whole clip, shrinking it to one bar, those three notes will now be changed accordingly to fit within that size.

Good idea! usually when I work with this type of stuff I am adding lets say a high hat pattern or changing or adding something after though.. I have to go try this and see exactly. If they would just let us drag notes like in the picture it would be limitless! I already REALLY like how they handle time signatures. so this one last thing for this type of stuff would be AMAZING.

a huge part of my workflow in 6.5 involves me auditioning all sorts of effects for my guitar through the mixer. I can't upgrade until they add this back.

unless I'm missing something. in 6.5 you can browse effects patches through the mixer on selected track. you don't have to load anything until you find a patch that fits what you want. as far as I can see.. in 8.. you have to load the patch/effects each and every time you want to audition patches.

I'm also still waiting for a ezdrummer, BFD or addictive drums equivalent.. and something that loads Kontakt files like Motu does.

I am also not a fan at all of the new interface. I REALLY wish they would give us the option to skin it like Reason 6.

Reason 8 was released September 30, 2014 maybe we will see version 9 soon?

I have several things to say:

a) @browser: Sorry, I started in Jan with 8. I dunno. There are several things I'd really like to have improved....which brings me to..

b) Probably no 9 in the near future. However, 8.4 is eminent. What it offers? I have no clue But clearly props are more interested in incremental non-paid updates at this time. Doesn't mean they are not working on 9, but it's not realistic to expect it anytime soon (I wish I was wrong about that BTW)

c) EZD2/Addictive: Are you missing the "pre programmed beat" parts? BFD core/jazz/funk or even reason drums (which can be had at a good price) is fine for quality of drum parts. A little eq, some comp, walla. However, the EZD2 IS still my absolute fav computer drum source. More than even their SUPERIOR drummer which sounds good but is generally too time consuming when you just want to get things done.

Seems to me, in all the time I've known you (yep) that there IS NOT one and only. You'll generally need two. I've gotten to where I give up on perfection and roll with reason because it's so stable and I actually get shit done. Reaper is awesome, S1 is awesome, but I never get shit done with them. So reason is my number one for quite some time (almost a year.....a record for me!)

for sure. but mainly for the multi sampled drum hits. no machine gun. yes Reason has a couple kits you can buy but I have tried them and they are not the same as something like ezdrummer. at all.

Thank you. of course I uninstalled the ver 8 demo last night.. do you mean you load the instruments/effects and then every single time you wanna go back you have to click on a revert button? for me when I'm auditioning dozens of effect and instrument patches.. the last thing I want is That. if that's how it works. if that is how it works now.. that is a huge pita in the long run. Compared to the normal old way. Now that I'm back messing with 6.5 I notice how much better the older interface looks to me.
