Hey guys/girls

I am in the market for for a new EQ and after a few friends told me about Fabfilter Pro-Q2 i decided i was going to dive in to it. That being said i do prefer a EQ with "Knobs" as to graphs as i tend to listen to the sound rather than look at it.

I am only able to buy one... Which one would you go for and why?

You can just use the knobs in pro-q 2 then.

DMG Audio Equilibrium would be a better choice as you can configure it as static knobs with no graph and it has all the modes the sonnox has

Get Voxengo Marvel GEQ. 16 band, just sliders, very clean response, and it's free. Save your money and get Pro C 2 instead.

Save even more money, forget pro c2 and pick up Kotelnikov GE , DC8C and MJUC!

Between those two you mentioned, ProQ 2, why, newer, cheaper, offers more.

Are you by any chance interested in vintage emulations with fixed bands or popularly called musical EQ's?

I love Toneboosters EQ included in Track Essentials for $20. It has super sound, M/S mode and automatic makeup per band feature so you can hear processed signal at the same level as dry one. I use it a lot as track EQ, highly recommanded

I believe Dave was also behind Sonnox before creating DMG Audio.

Paul Frindle was Sonnox. He did the software for the Oxford consoles (and i believe was involved in their port to plugins), as well as designing the SSL G-series channel electronics.

Dave was with Focusrite and Sonalksis.

RE: the OP, between the sonnox and ProQ2, i'd probably say ProQ2, if only for the extra bands (and if memory serves, you can set LPF's higher), and no iLok (i don't know if that's a consideration for you or not).
ProQ2 is quite nice. I'd have bought it if i didn't already have EQuilibrium.
FWIW, I'd actually replaced my Sonnox EQ with EQuality when it came out (and then went to EQuilibrium when it was released a couple of years later).

All are worth investigating...demo them puppies!

The Sonnox EQ is probably the most overpriced one in the market, I haven't touched it in years since using Pro-Q1/2.

Have both, Sonnox and FF. Since FF never touched Sonnox again. FF sounds cleaner to me and the GUI is way better. It's a matter of taste, that you like static knobs better, but Sonnox is definitely overpriced.

If you don't feel FF, have a look at other competitors. E.g. DMG Equilibrum. They sound better than Sonnox.

For colorful EQs you have to go anyway another route

Unfortunately CPU hit is not that low, already wrote to Stian about it, hope it will get 30-50% reduced at least.

ProQ 2 in most demanding mode on my i5 quad takes 0,4%, with others ranging from 0,1% to 0,2%, on other hand Equalize is respectively in 3 modes (Minimum, Mixed and Linear) like this: 2,2%, 2,3% and 2,4%, that's huge for channel EQ.

Turns out I was wrong about CPU usage, more about it on next page, sorry for this

Don't take me wrong, even if I'm doing Equalize disservice here, I'm all for him, mixed phase alone is worth CPU hit and the price of course, but what sold me totally on it is slope increment shaping, I took ABX Test For VST-Plugins app and cornered Equalize with some vintage EQ and likes I could get my hands on, was impressed how close I can get and how much I can cover with Equalize in matching curve's department, ProQ just can't come close in 50% of cases, he got fixed slope's, thus many of the curves are fine tuned somewhere in between.

Have you tried the Pro-Q2 demo?

For a long time, I ignored Fabfilter plugins as I like to see all the controls and prefer a more immediate UI, with a good overview.

Then, I tried the demo and loved it and it's now my go-to EQ plugin.
(I still have a couple of others that I use for specific tasks; one for high boost, one for low, but I think I'm just sticking with those out of habit and could probably use Pro-Q2 if I took a few minutes to match the frequencies/curves.)

It was actually the UI that one me over in the end; it's remarkable quick and easy to use and - as everyone will tell you - the features and overall quality speak for themselves.
