Finally made my account here, been lurking for ages.
I wanna ditch my beloved Logitech X-530 speaker setup because am planning to release some tracks within the next month or two. I loved the speakers and they lasted more than a decade with a surprisingly reasonable audio quality. However, all my mixdowns now sound shit on other systems but them so I decided to go for something new.
Influenced by the mainstream I had the KRK's in mind as you see them literally everywhere. However, the frequency response appears to be awful compared to other speakers in that segment. What I got in mind now were the HS7/8. They seem to be a pretty solid choice for someone who doesn't plan to spend 3000 bucks on speakers. But here's the catch: some people say that the HS8 covers the subs well, others say they don't. Some people say the HS8+sub is too much, but HS7 + a sub would be perfect, others say using only HS7's is the way to go.
So I wanted to hear your opinions. I will mostly be producing Neurofunk/DnB and a few other genres but these aren't that important, my focus is on Neurofunk and therefore the subs need to be as accurate as possible.
I have a friend who achieves wonderful mixes with nothing but a pair of KRK6G3's but the stats made me hate them before even trying.
IF you recommend a sub to go with the HS7/8, which one would it be, which one would "fit"? I hoped so much that I don't have to spend more than $500 but it looks I am far from that. I saw that Yamaha offers a sub in their HS branch, the HS 8S, but together with the speakers I would end up spending almost $1000.
What can you recommend, especially for a bass-heavy genre that Neurofunk is?
If I went for HS7/8 + sub, how long do you think they would be "sufficient" for mixing, regarding the process of technology getting better every month? If I kept in mind I will keep these speakers for 5 years so they will actually cost me about $200 per year I might be able to familiarize myself with that a bit more. But how "fast" is this market? Will I be looking at something new in 3 years already?
Also, if you have other non-yamaha suggestions, please tell me.
PS: Just realized Yamaha recommends at least 2' distance to the wall behind them as the bass is going that way. How seriously do I need to take that? 1 ft is best I can do in my room.. Might that be a reason why I should buy a sub anyway? So I can cancel out the subs on my speakers due to positioning?
Cheers
