Geek fun with T-RackS for BeOS

I drew a blank looking for any of the old IK demos for BeOS recently. Then I remembered that BeOS 4.5 had the demo for T-RackS on disc.

As I only have a PowerPC BeOS system available I wasn't able to run the demo (I think it's Intel-only) so I turned to the latest nightly of Haiku and VirtualBox. Surprisingly, it runs! Here's a couple of screenshots for the hell of it. That late 90s UI

OMG, I used to love this OS and remember passing by their headquarters while thinking about how Jean-Louis Gassee and company were going to take over where Jobs had left off when Scully took over at Apple. MacOS seemed doomed at that time.

So sad what happened to this OS. Had sooo much potential!

I miss it too. I loved that you could install it to a virtual partition within windows. it ran circles around 9x, and in some cases, MS is only just now catching up.
those t-rax grabs are a blast from the past...wasn't it a standalone (versus a plugin) at some point?

Yeah it was standalone at this point. I also found the GrooveMaker 2.0 demo in my archives.



I remember reading an article about BeOS in a magazine back around '96 or '97 when it was coming to PCs. It sounded like it was going to kill everything out there. But alas, while it was great at some things, it sorely lacked elsewhere and the big apps never came. Something like Cubase VST on this would have been wicked. The installation method for the Personal Edition (harddisk image and an entry in the Windows boot manager) was genius at the time.

Sometime in '99 I finally got a copy of R4.5 and had it multibooting on my old Pentium 200MMX with Windows 98 (for speed) and 2000 (for not crashing).

I liked it too but it wasn't quite prime time ready and then they up and died on us.
