Hi everyone,
I've recently had the confirmation that the Vanguard synth was dead, and that there was nothing anyone could do about it. Thus I'm looking for a replacement, that would be able to make oldschool Goa acids. I've found nothing as good as Vanguard so far, even if I've managed to re-create some of my sounds with Zebra and Ohmicide. I'm also interested in other synths which have creative filters, and basically anything that can make good acids.
Thanks in advance.

For me Serum was direct replacement for Vanguard - used it only for basslines. With its multitude of filters Serum can do interesting stuff with acid, but for cookie cutter sounds I pick Dune 2.

I'd try Hive or Spire personally.

For authentic oldschool goa I'd pick something based on classic hardware used in that style, like Tal Bassline 101 or 303 emulations from Audiorealism or D16.

I make my acidic psytrance sequences with Sylenth and Zebra, sometimes I run them into Guitar Rig and mess with different distortion models. Spire and Dune2 are also good for acid lines, they have dedicated filters for that. DIscovery Pro is another good choice for agressive psytrance sounds.

I never used Vanguard though, was it really that special? Why cannot you still use it if you have a license?
You may think you can fly ... but you better not try

Wow that sounds good! I'm definitely gonna try this one.

Gonna try both. Thanks!

I've already got both. Spire is great but it does modern acids, Sean Tyas style stuff. Hive does interesting things, but it is still very limited in my opinion.

The 303 emulations are good, but that's not exactly what I'm looking for. With the vanguard I could add a lot of variation to my sounds. Sounds pretty much like 303, but not 303, and that's what I like about it. The filters are very creative, and so are the sound waves. And I like the fact that you can get a good sound in 3 minutes, just like with the Sylenth.

I use both Sylenth and Zebra too for my acids, most of the time with Ohmicide. Most of the time I get pretty much what I want, but I got better results with Vanguard.

The problem with vanguard is that it was discontinued a long time ago, and it is very very buggy. I'm having problems opening my projects, a lot of crashes, and I have to use a plugin bridge since it's 32-bit.

You can also try an external filter plugin, I love Sugarbytes Wow2, it has some great filter and drive modes which don't emulate anything and can make some really crazy sounds

It seems good indeed, but I use cutoff envelopes most of the times.

The answer is Sylenth

Sylenth is good, and I've always used it, but you're kinda limited when it comes to making acids. You can just do the classics with it: distorted acid, 303, Ellis acids, but it's hard to get something really different.

Instead of giving you names , pick a synth that has a great sounding filer.

If you already have zebra ,try the XMF module or one of the new algos added in VCF

Ellis acids
Could you elaborate?

Absolutely agree, 101 is just the thing for it, especially TAL version :phones:
This entire forum is wading through predictions, opinions, barely formed thoughts, drama, and whining. If you don't enjoy that, why are you here? :D ShawnG

Perhaps define what you mean then? Acids are generally thought of as the 303/Tyas sounds.

Do you mean Adam Ellis?
