Hi everyone,

I'm a bit confused about audio rates on the iPad. I've read that iOS only supports up to 48 kHz and that this is also being enforced on the new iPhones. However, in iVCS I can set the audio rate to 96 kHz. Theoretically, that is, since every time I try to go over 48 kHz I get an error message saying that other apps are blocking the setting (even after restarting the device).

Now I'm left to wonder: are audio rates over 48 kHz even possible on iOS? Or is it just my iPad mini 1st gen? Is iVCS setting for 96 kHz only for internal calculations? Then it shouldn't be blocked by other apps. I realize this only makes sense if I use a digital out because I guess the analogue out of the iPad doesn't go higher than 44 or 48 kHz.

And just if you ask why I even bother: because high frequencies in iVCS are audibly aliasing which makes iVCS unusable to me although I otherwise really like it.

Anybody with some knowledge on this? Your insight would be much appreciated.

Lightning port can handle 96K.
Headphone jack is 48K max.
Apps need to be programmed to handle 96K (like I think Audioshare and Auria do)
It may also be true that only iOS 8 and 9 can handle 96K
IMO 96K is really only nice if you're recording acoustic sources.

iPad mini 1 is very underpowered for latest versions of iOS.
Don't ask me, I just play here.

Hi siriusbliss,

thanks a lot for the data, that's very useful. I try to get 96 kHz over musicIO. However, what I'm reading is:

"still only 44.1khz over lighting to mac
I don't understand what is going on. They said iOS 9 is 24/48khz and 5.1
and what do we get 44.1 and stereo ???"

I don't want to record or playback audio, it's because iVCS3 is aliasing badly in the higher registers.
