Is it possible to use a controller such as the mod wheel to fade bewteen samples? I thought i might use this to fade in vibrato for example. Is it possible to do this in Kontakt, or would i need something like Giga?

With 2 seperate soundfiles, you could try to set them both to the same midi channel, then assign mod wheel to volume for both sounds, negative modulation for one, positive modulation for the other.
Why don't you just use delayed LFO for vibrato in Kontakt?
Peter.

You can fade between samples with sfz, if you have the proper sfz file loaded in the sampler. There's lots of way to do it too. Take a look here:
The sfz Format
You can cross-fade using the mod wheel, or any other MIDI continuous controller for that matter. You can also cross-fade between voices based on velocity, or by the position of note on the keyboard. (I mean real cross-fading too, not simple keyboard splits.)
Come to think of it, the Ensoniq Mirage would cross-fade between two sample sets by using the mod wheel.

I have some acoustic samples and LFO vibrato sounds to artificial. I have some seperate vibrato samples which im looking to use, but how to fade them in? I use Kontakt, but if its not possible with that I have access to a Giga setup. Not used Soundfonts, would it be worth trying?

I'm not sure if the soundfont reference was in response to my post about sfz or not, but I thought you should know that sfz also supports WAV, and SFZ format files. You don't have to sacrifice quality and use soundfonts. If you can assemble a collection of WAV files, you can then write an SFZ file to go with them, which tells the sfz sampler exactly how and when to play your WAV samples. The SFZ file is a simple text file that could be written in notepad, if you want. I hope you didn't confuse SFZ with SF2? They are totally different things.tee boy wrote:Not used Soundfonts, would it be worth trying?
If you weren't responding to me, then just overlook what I said, if you want.

Crossfading samples by using any MIDI controller is definitely possible in Kontakt and Giga.I have some acoustic samples and LFO vibrato sounds to artificial. In Kontakt:
1- Select all samples to fade-in and create a group.
2- Edit the group AMPLIFIER stage and add a MIDI-CC external control. Select CC1, set it to control the volume at 100%.
3- Repeat steps 1 and 2 with the samples to fade-out. Select the modulation amount to -100%.
In Giga:
Run the Crossfade Editor.

Hmm... Here's the one small problem.tee boy wrote:Yeh that all sounds like stuff i should know. Like i say, Iv never had anything to do with either sfz or sf2, could you point me in the direction of some good articles / tutorials etc?
The SFZ format is so new that I don't believe there are any tutorials yet. The sfz sampler was created by René, of rgcAudio. His company has a forum here on K-v-R. I'm sure they would be glad to answer any questions you had in detail, but I don't think there is an actual tutorial yet.
Something to keep in mind is that René produces two samplers, sfz and sfz+. The "plus" version he charges money for, and the sfz is a freebie. However, when he developed his new sfz file format, he did the development work with the freebie sfz sampler, so even the freebie sampler supports all the sfz format features (and there are lots of features.)
I would suggest visiting the rgcAudio forum, and ask René and rest of the group about the sfz format and the sfz sampler. You might not need to spend a lot of money on an expensive sampler. If sfz or sfz+ has all the features you need, it will save you a ton of money, and the sound of these two sample players is simply excellent.

Great stuff, thanks for the advice all! If this can be done with Kontakt then I'll probably stick to home turf, but I'll definately check out sfz freebie.
Cheers all!
