What is the Sonic Forest?
The physical instrument of the same name is an unusual electroacoustic design consisting of various-gauge guitar strings mounted to a box with a contact mic and line output. Striking or bowing the strings produces a range of tones from pure to dissonant and inharmonic. We recorded hundreds of samples from this instrument from different positions, both struck & bowed, with multiple dynamics, round robins, and strings.
Our Instrument
We expanded on the forest theme by creating a visually inspiring UI built around the idea of sound as a literal forest. By "planting" a sound it is spread across the keyboard, and fed into the custom granular engine. This creates a virtual forest of granular echoes which can be morphed and altered by evocatively named controls like Flood, Sun, Blossom, and Flourish.
