Hi.

I'm making an EDM track. When I apply sidechain compression to anything, it becomes very noisy and strange. I'm using Ableton's stock compressor, no other FX, with the following settings:

It may be worth trying this, Live 9's compressor isn't always rated the best for sidechain duties...

Seems like it's just a result of the attack being crazy fast combined with the low trigger threshold & ratio, increase the attack & lower the ratio and it should be fine.

Exactly, pretty extreme settings there. I'd guess it has little to do with sidechaining or the compressor, you just need additional tweaking

Use FF1 (feedforward) detection and you will hear a cleaner action. Also set attack to one third the lookahead time for the smoothest gain change that still catches the attack but with minimum artifacts.

Your release is way too fast too. I use a 'ghost' kick for the ducking trigger, ensuring it is exactly a 16th note long wih no tail/fade out. This ensures your release is going to kick in at a musically relevant point.

Use full ratio to set threshold such that your transfer function graphs threshold circle goes no lower than the dot that represents level. Then set your release time so that it recovers musically (usually meaning an eighth note or offbeat). I find something around 40 to 50 ms works well but your tempo and swing settings will determine this. Then simply back off on the ratio to lessen the effect whilst maintaining the solid timing achived at that threshold and release time.

How do I run a Live 8 compressor on Live 7? And what does it have to do with Live 9? How is Live 8 older than Live 7?

Ended up raising the attack and release not long after posting, fixed it.

yeah i don't think they saw in your OP that you were already using the live 7/8 compressor. I don't think there are any differences between v7/8 compressor

Edit - You're just using a zero release time. Make it a bit longer and the distortion will go away.

Ableton Sidechain Noise
