ok well im not sure where to post this so im posting it here.

a buddy and i are collaborating of some tunes...hes using ableton live 8 and im using fl studio 12.

we are sending wav files back and forth

i made a drum track and sent it to him...he tinkered with it and sent it back, adding some stuff to it.

now...he has his daws tempo set to 82 bpm...but when i import the wav file and set fls to 82bpm...the thing goes out of time almost immediately.

what would cause our tempos to not sync up, and how do we correct it?

ive never collaborated with anyone before...im a bit out of my element here.

Both Ableton Live and FLStudio are able to stretch a drum track of some bars to whatever tempo the project is in, irrespective of its original tempo/length.

Maybe there's an additional short silence in the track at the end?

You sure youve got matching sample rates in both hosts?

Also chaosWyrM, and apologies if this sounds a stupid/obvious suggestion, but are you setting your DAW's tempo at 82bpm prior to importing/dropping in the audio track, or after it has been imported?

My hunch is that your problem is to do with audio warp/stretching within one, if not both, of Ableton Live and FL.

With Ableton Live 8 (which your friend and I use), I must always set the tempo first prior to introducing the new audio track because otherwise Ableton can (depending upon preferences options) do very odd things to the timing, due to warp / stretch and other such functions.

I'm not sure if FL has some sort of warping / stretching ability too, but it could be a similar issue as Ableton's preference options buggering up the audio if you introduce it before setting the tempo.
(By default, Ableton Live's tempo is set to 120BPM, which one can change and then save as a new default document. Is this the same as FL?).

thanks for the replies,

ill respond to each of those.

1. its not just a drum track now...i sent him a small drum track loop...and he mangled it up and added to it. ive tried to stretch it, but the time drift doesnt seem uniform...so no matter what i do it wont stay in time the whole way.

2. yes we are both using 44.1

3. i actually dont know if i set it before or after...but ill try that. as far as warping goes...fls doesnt really have a warping thing like ableton. in my (very) limited exp. with ableton the warp feature frightened and confused me...im not sure what its doing. my friend said though that its more for importing audio, and his warp feature, if it was even enabled (he turns it off) shouldnt effect anything on my side.

but i will go and set my bpm to the correct amount before importing the audio and see if that helps.

i was looking into this issue last night...and it seems that maybe theres just no way to get them synced properly. if i understand it correctly...unless our two computers were synced with something like word clock...theres no way it will ever sync properly. tempos in daws are not like actual real world time.

so if i set my daw to 82bpm...and then check the time at bar 30...it wont be the same time if he (or anyone else) sets his daw to 82bpm and checks the time at bar 30.

is that right?

well what do you know? that totally worked! i def. did originally change the tempo after importing it...as i didnt know what the tempo was. setting it to the proper tempo before importing did the trick.

yeah thats basically what i found out last night digging around, though i didnt see that particular thread. which is why i was surprised when dark waters suggestion worked. i was preparing myself to have to find a workaround.
