Hi all,
What do you think is the best free DAW for the purpose of editing vocal tracks for podcasts (really just need an intuitive crossfade function)? Something very easy to use (for people who have minimal experience with DAWs).

It's not a DAW, it's a multitrack editor:

And how to use it for podcasting:

I know Audacity and I hate it. It is annoying to use and doesn't have that beautiful crossfade functionality like other DAWs do (screenshot of what I mean attached)
Thanks for the reply anyhow, but I'm looking for something a little more easy to use with the crossfade thingo

I like the one in Reaper, though I'm no expert when it comes to crossfades.
Oops, forgot about the free part
And no, I don't think Reaper is free!
Cheers!

Tracktion 4 is free:

seems to have an auto-crossfade function when 2 audio clips overlap, at least according to its manual (pg. 117-118):

Isn't there a free version of ProTools out now? PT is the best audio editor I've used so far; in terms of speed and expected results.

I personally think Reaper is twice as fast to use. Some functions like clip gain is a 3 click process in PT where in Reaper, you just float the cursor over the top of the clip. PT also has very basic waveform editing.Unaspected wrote:Isn't there a free version of ProTools out now? PT is the best audio editor I've used so far; in terms of speed and expected results.
Get Reaper and pay for it when you can. It's only $60 and the download is the full version - nothings cut from it. Get Reaper and you'll be happy.

Audacity offers precision on the placement, fade, amplitude, and effectscruisy18 wrote:I know Audacity and I hate it. It is annoying to use and doesn't have that beautiful crossfade functionality like other DAWs do
of both tracks you want to crossfade. Maybe not needed that often
in podcasts, but I'd recommend taking a little more time, to achieve
superior results. I find that the annoyance of audio tools subsides
as my understanding and skill with them increases, snails pace as it may be.
Cheers

Yeah, it's not really being developed very much. No doubt that the dev has a job, and not much time to spend on Wavosaur. Also, the interface looks quite Windows 98-ish.
Personally, i love Wavelab. You can either get Wavelab LE, which is quite limited though, with a mag, and/or Wavelab Elements, either as an upgarde for LE, for about 50 €, or full price for 99 €. Not free, but will give you a MUCH better interface and fx than Audacity.
