Alan Vega, vocalist of the influential electropunk duo Suicide, died yesterday at age 78. The first Suicide album, recorded in 1977, was years ahead of its time. I have fond memories of seeing Alan perform solo many times in New York in the nineties. I also saw one of the last Suicide gigs in New York where I happened to be standing next to their rather tall producer Ric Ocasek. RIP Alan.

Aw man.

I almost saw them live. Went with a friend to see them back in 2001 but they didn't show (and nobody bothered to tell us). It was shortly after 9/11. There was maybe a couple of dozen of us waiting outside the venue but eventually it was clear we weren't getting in.

"Dream, Baby, Dream"...I bought that 12" in '79 or '80. I was living in NYC from '81 to '85 and failed to seize the opportunity to see Suicide...big regret.

Suicide live was pretty chaotic. Alan didn't know the lyrics to his songs so he made up new lyrics on the spot. Instead of playing his keyboard, Martin literally punched and karate chopped it. Alan said in an interview they never rehearsed. They showed up and whatever happened happened.

If you were looking for a professional gig that sounded like the record, you would be disappointed. But it was amusing, if you were open minded. The gig was quite a scene with lots of girls wearing huge Suicide style sunglasses indoors.

One of the unique gigs I saw was Vegasonic: Alan Vega + Pansonic. They processed his voice through their modular synths making an unbelievable hellish racket. I was watching it from the bar and the bartender described it as "writing love songs to your blender." :)

I like this unofficial video:

I saw them at a festival circa 2004 knowing absolutely nothing about them beforehand. They were exceptional. Martin Rev's stage presence was unlike anything I'd ever seen - torturing the keys of his synth with arms, elbows, whatever came to hand, all with a manic Jokeresque grin permanently etched on his face.

Vega will be dearly missed.

Sad, but he got to live a full life.

I was not into Suicide during their original run, but listening to their stuff later, made me realize that they had a massive influcence on bands I dug in the 80's like Soft Cell.

RIP :(
