FF400 total mix users - help routing Mics to SPDIF/ADAT

This is what I have tried (standalone):

Mic 1+2 XLR in FF400, ADAT out to Sony PCM50 optical in. Sony set to 'line'. Settings on FF are set to SPDIF (FF ADAT can function as SPDIF). With these settings both mics are on the Right channel of the Sony only.

So in Totalmix I set AN1mono (panned left) to Spdif (and ADAT1mono), and AN2mono (panned right) to Spdif (and ADAT2mono). Saved to Flash on FF. With these settings I get nothing on the Sony.
